(Hechos 28:1-2) Estando ya a salvo, supimos que la isla se llamaba Malta. (2) Y los naturales nos trataron con no poca humanidad; porque encendiendo un fuego, nos recibieron a todos, a causa de la lluvia que caía, y del frío.

Seguramente Pablo estaba pensando que ya lo peor había pasado, pero ocurrió algo más…
(Hechos 28:3-4) Entonces, habiendo recogido Pablo algunas ramas secas, las echó al fuego; y una víbora, huyendo del calor, se le prendió en la mano. (4) Cuando los naturales vieron la víbora colgando de su mano, se decían unos a otros: Ciertamente este hombre es homicida, a quien, escapado del mar, la justicia no deja vivir.

La gente local seguramente reconoció el tipo de serpiente que mordió a Pablo, y sabían que iba a morir. Les pareció irónico que él se hubiera salvado del naufragio sólo para morir por la mordida de una serpiente. Atribuyeron esa “mala suerte” a algo malo que él había hecho. Pero Pablo se quedó tranquilo, no sólo porque tenía limpia su conciencia sino porque sabía que él todavía tenía un propósito que cumplir en Roma. Así como Dios lo había salvado del naufragio y del intento de asesinato en Jerusalén, Pablo sabía que Dios lo libraría del veneno de la serpiente.

Lo que al principio parecía una tragedia luego se tornó en un milagro. Dios permitió que el suceso con la serpiente sirviera como testimonio para todos los presentes:
(Hechos 28:5-6) Pero él, sacudiendo la víbora en el fuego, ningún daño padeció. (6) Ellos estaban esperando que él se hinchase, o cayese muerto de repente; mas habiendo esperado mucho, y viendo que ningún mal le venía, cambiaron de parecer y dijeron que era un dios.

Pero ese no fue el único milagro que presenciaron…
(Hechos 28:7-10) En aquellos lugares había propiedades del hombre principal de la isla, llamado Publio, quien nos recibió y hospedó solícitamente tres días. (8) Y aconteció que el padre de Publio estaba en cama, enfermo de fiebre y de disentería; y entró Pablo a verle, y después de haber orado, le impuso las manos, y le sanó. (9) Hecho esto, también los otros que en la isla tenían enfermedades, venían, y eran sanados; (10) los cuales también nos honraron con muchas atenciones; y cuando zarpamos, nos cargaron de las cosas necesarias.

La estadía en Malta cumplió un propósito. No sólo los maltenses ayudaron a Pablo, sino que también él los ayudó, y más importante aún, les dejó el Evangelio. Los tres meses que tuvieron que invernar en la isla no se desperdiciaron, sino que dejaron en la isla el testimonio de quién es el Dios verdadero .

No importa la dificultad que estamos pasando lo que importa es que Dios esta con todos nosotros👏

(Acts 28: 1-2) Being safe now, we learned that the island was called Malta. (2) And the natives treated us with no little humanity; because by lighting a fire, they welcomed us all, because of the rain that fell, and the cold.

Surely Pablo was thinking that the worst was over, but something else happened ...
(Acts 28: 3-4) Then, Paul having gathered up some dry branches, he threw them into the fire; and a viper, fleeing the heat, caught in his hand. (4) When the natives saw the viper hanging from their hand, they said to each other: Certainly this man is a murderer, who, escaped from the sea, justice does not let live.

The local people surely recognized the type of snake that bit Paul, and they knew that he was going to die. They found it ironic that he had been saved from the shipwreck only to die from a snake bite. They attributed this "bad luck" to something bad that he had done. But Paul stayed calm, not only because his conscience was clear but because he knew that he still had a purpose to fulfill in Rome. Just as God had saved him from the shipwreck and the assassination attempt in Jerusalem, Paul knew that God would deliver him from the venom of the serpent.

What at first seemed like a tragedy later turned into a miracle. God allowed the event with the serpent to serve as a testimony for everyone present:
(Acts 28: 5-6) But he, shaking the viper in the fire, suffered no harm. (6) They were waiting for him to swell, or drop dead suddenly; but having waited a long time, and seeing that no harm was coming, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

But that was not the only miracle they witnessed ...
(Acts 28: 7-10) In those places there were properties of the main man of the island, called Publius, who received us and gave us hospitality for three days. (8) And it came to pass that Publius's father was in bed, sick with fever and dysentery; and Paul came in to see him, and after he had prayed, he laid his hands on him and healed him. (9) This done, the others who had diseases on the island also came and were healed; (10) who also honored us with many attentions; and when we set sail, they loaded us with the necessary things.

The stay in Malta served a purpose. Not only did the Malteians help Paul, but he also helped them, and more importantly, he left the Gospel to them. The three months that they had to winter on the island were not wasted, but they left on the island the testimony of who the true God is.

No matter the difficulty we are going through, what matters is that God is with all of us👏
