[SEASON 4] Steemit Crypto Academy Week 1 Homework Post for @yohan2on | Blockchain Technology and The Internet of Things (IoT)

Hey Guys..!!

Meet again with me Wahyu Nahrul on the other Steemit Crypto Academy homework. Today I will be working on homework given by one of our professors @yohan2on.

The homework given by our professor this week is about Blockchain Technology and The Internet of Things (IoT).

IoT and Blockchain Relationship

Technological developments are very fun to observe because they will always change towards new things in a very short time. If we look back at the 90s when television was still black and white, it was a new thing and at that time there were still many people who used letters to communicate with other people. Then slowly people have started to recognize the internet which is the biggest development in the history of technology that makes changes in most of the behavior of human life.

However, technological developments do not stop there, now many people are trying to break technological developments to a new level and one of the results is the discovery of Internet of Things (IoT).

Internet of Things (IoT) was first introduced by Kevin Ashton in 1999 during his presentation at the launch of Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. RFID itself was originally a technology that offered tracking services for an item remotely using radio frequencies, then it began to develop until finally in 2011 RFID was able to provide location information and the identity of a device remotely using the internet network.

If simplified, IoT is a technology that is able to connect all electronic devices that we have today with the internet, so that all connected devices will integrate with each other and can be controlled easily using a smartphone or laptop. This is a step that is being developed rapidly by developers around the world, there are already many products that are starting to implement IoT technology.

An example is a doorknob that is implemented with IoT which allows homeowners to lock or open the door using only a smartphone from a distance, then this doorknob is also placed with sensors that allow it to see who enters the house. All of these things can be done because the doorknob and the smartphone owned by the homeowner are connected to the internet so that these two devices are connected indirectly even though the distance is quite far.

However, IoT has a major drawback. Because all devices connected to the internet are connected to all people in the world, it will increase the risk of hacking. It is commonplace where incidents of theft are carried out using only the internet network, hackers are getting smarter in finding loopholes to try to get into the security system and commit crimes.

This is very risky, especially like the implementation of IoT on doorknobs that I explained earlier, if the command given to the doorknob is hacked then our house will be very easy to break into, and from what should be IoT is a technological advancement that makes it easier for humans to become a detrimental catastrophe.

Therefore it would be very good for IoT to "patch" these deficiencies by using Blockchain technology. As we know that blockchain is a technology that has a very high level of security because it uses nodes to validate a transaction and will be stored on devices around the world, this will be very difficult for hackers to commit crimes because they will not be able to hack. one by one device that validates the transaction.

Apart from security, there are several other things that make IoT highly dependent on Blockchain in carrying out its technology, including:

  • Scalability Issues

Another thing that is the biggest problem with IoT is scalability. IoT still uses a centralized network system where all transactions are charged to one centralized server so that it will make the transaction process very long and transaction failures often occur, if IoT is able to work with Blockchain technology then this will be very easy to overcome.

This is because blockchain is a technology that has been able to handle great scalability, there are already many types of blockchain that are able to serve thousands or even tens of thousands of transactions per second such as the Tron blockchain which is able to handle 2,000 transactions per second and Solana which is even 29,000 TPS.

  • Data Authenticity

The centralized system used by IoT today has a weakness where the data on the server is not safe from misuse. All data on the centralized server will be manipulated by parties who have access to the server, they can freely change the existing data according to their wishes. But with blockchain, it will be very small or will never happen, because no one has power on a blockchain so it is completely clean from the cunning of bad people.

  • Bug Resistance

Bugs are errors that very often occur by IoT technology, with bugs it will open a gap for hackers to enter the network and do as they please, this is very serious where the data security of all users is at stake.

Blockchain is a network composed of various chained blocks, in which data from these blocks will be stored independently on the user's device. This will be very useful if there is a bug in an application based on Blockchain, because even if one data is tried to be hacked, the other data will be safe or not touched at all, and until now blockchain is one of the most powerful technologies to overcome the bugs that occur.

Filament

After previously I explained why blockchain will have a huge impact on IoT technology, now I will explain one example of a company that develops IoT on a Blockchain basis, the name of the company is "Filament".

Filament is a technology company founded in 2012 with Allison Clift-Jennings as CEO, this company develops various electronic devices such as hardware, software that will certainly use IoT technology and at the same time connect to Blockchain.

This company makes a tool called "Blocklets" which is useful as a "connector" between IoT and Blockchain. Blocklets will be used as a place to transfer, record data, and other things related to transactions, and all of these things will be recorded in the blockchain so that the whole process will be a patch for the IoT deficiencies that we discussed in the previous discussion.

In 2019, Filament collaborated with a university in Reno, namely the University of Nevada. This project is a development project for a car called an autonomous car. The goal is to make blockchain part of the technology that will connect vehicles to a wider network. The system works is to create a car that does not require a driver which will be combined with a ledger technology and then will produce data that is very necessary for the development of driverless cars in the future.

In the past few years, this company has collaborated with various other technology companies such as Intel Capital, Samsung, Hyperledger, Ethereum Alliance, etc. Especially his collaboration with the Ethereum Alliance (EEA) company is a collaboration to connect IoT technology with the Ethereum Blockchain in order to get strong security, increase scalability, etc. all of which aim to cover the shortcomings of IoT by using Blockchain technology.

Last Word (Conclusion)

Internet of Things is a technology that has not been implemented properly in real life. But slowly, many IoT developers are starting to implement this technology with various devices that are often used daily.

By combining Blockchain technology with IoT, it will make a very positive breakthrough, where both can cover each other's shortcomings so that they will break technological developments.

Those are some of my explanations regarding Blockchain Technology and The Internet of Things (IoT), I apologize if there are still many mistakes that you can get when reading my explanation earlier, I would be very grateful if you told me in the comments column below.

Thank you for reading my blog, hope it will be useful for all of you. 😁
