Good day, everyone. I'm back here to present the task given by the Steemit crypto professor @sapwood in a lecture where he discussed extensively about Steem Blockchain. It's a really great lecture and I will be doing justice to it to the best of my ability.

What you need to know about Voting and Curation

With one's basic knowledge, voting can be termed as curation but looking further into the meaning of these two words, you will see that they have different technical meaning and so their usage should differ.

Voting is the process by which a user on Steemit found a random post or content and decide to upvote it without considering what the content is really all about while Curating is the process by which a user that serves as a curator finds a post, read it thoroughly and find no blemishes in it such that he/she is so certain that it's useful to everyone on the Steemit platform or community then upvote it.

When a curator finds a genuine content and upvoted it, such content turns to curated content and thereby completes the curation process which is so far different from ordinary voting.

What happens when you vote on post before 5mins or beyond 6days 12hrs

It is to be noted that rewards are given to authors on Steemit and also to the other users that voted (curators) on their contents, this is distributed in a equal proportion otherwise, 50/50 (%), where 50% of the total reward goes to the author and the remaining 50% to the curators that curated the content. A curator stand the chance to get the 100% and more of his total upvote value from the shared reward if he voted on a post at 5mins(+) and before the post exceed 6days 12hrs.

If a curator votes before the 5mins of a post then his reward tends to depreciate with the change in time (∆t). Following the illustration below;

1 min - The curator gets 20% of the reward and the remaining 80% returns to the reward pool.

2mins - The curator gets 40% of the reward and the remaining 60% returns to the reward pool.

3mins - The curator gets 60% of the reward and the remaining 40% returns to the reward pool.

4mins - The curator gets 80% of the reward and the remaining 20% returns to the reward pool.

5mins - The curator gets 100% of the reward and the remaining 0% returns to the reward pool.

And this also happens to a post at 6days 12hrs+, the curation reward drops in percentage as the post age above 6days 12hrs.

The first voter tend to earn more than other voters on a post. In some instance, some voters decides to vote at 4mins so that they can have a better position giving up the 20% to the reward and in that case, they might stand the chance to earn better instead of given up better position all in the sake of waiting for 5mins.

The screenshot below shows that I voted on a post after 4days 11hrs 43mins 54secs.

How to check if some rewards has returned to the reward pool

To check for this, it is easily done using the invention by @steemchiller; Steemworld.org, to see all activities on a post.

  • Visit Steemworld.org, Post <---> Select a post <---> Explore its activity. As shown below.

No rewards returned

The last screenshot shows that no rewards was returned to the reward pool.

When a curator can earn beyond his 100% upvote value

It's possible for a curator to earn more than 100% of his upvote value if he is the first genuine voter on a post, that is, he voted when the post was still at 0$. I will consider using the professor's formula to get this shown mathematically.

Taking, Pp7 as curator's 7days payout value

Pin as curator's initial upvote value

And

Ptr as total rewards generated by the post after 7 days.

Now, use the formula - Pp7 = (1/2) √Ptr(Pin - √0)∆t

∆t for all votes after 5mins is 1.

Assuming the first curator's upvote value is 16$ and the payout on a post at 7days is 256$, then we have;

Pp7 = (1/2) √256(√16-√0)1 = 32$

In this case the curator have earned 200% of his initial upvote value.

My Voting position on a post and projected reward

I will still be using the steemworld.org for this, following the steps as indicated in screenshots below.

  • Coming rewards <---> Curation rewards <---> Press Refresh. To see my voting activities.

Projected reward

From the screenshot above shows that my projected reward is 0.002 SP (Steem Power).

  • To check for my position on the post, it's required to explore the post's chart and it is shown below.

  • Select chart <---> Vote after (To sort the voters) <---> Locate your username.

My position

My position from the above revealed that I voted on the post after 4days 11hrs 43mins 54secs with a vote weight of 100% totalling to 0.00$ upvote value.

The role of curation to better content discovery on Steem blockchain

As I've said earlier, Curation goes beyond ordinary voting but involves finding great content, read it and be sure it is suitable for all, certify that it's safe for the entire Steemit, collate these good contents, and upvote it using the stake-weighted mechanism(SP) [Note: More SP, more influence]. All the above steps are very important to better content discovery on the Steem blockchain.

Conclusion

It is important to know how voting and curation works on the Steem blockchain and the mechanism to which rewards are allocated to good contents from the reward pool through the Proof of Brain. With proper understanding of the Steem Blockchain, you are equipped with all you need to do at any point in time to your favour and to make the entire Steemit a better place. Thank you for attending the lecture in Steemit-Crypto-Academy & doing the homework task-5.

A curator stand the chance to get the 100% and more of his total upvote value from the shared reward if he voted on a post at 5mins(+) and before the post exceed 6days 12hrs.

Although the general voting window is considered as 5 mins to 6 days 12 hrs age of a post, it may not be a necessary condition to vote at 5 mins or after in all types of posts. In trending posts, or in specific initiatives, contests, and challenges(e.g. crypto contest, steemit crypto academy, etc) the advanced curators vote inside 5 mins also(at 4 mins in general) and still gain significant curation rewards because in such a post many curators compete against each other, so even if you lose 20% curation reward(by voting at 4 mins), being an early voter in a trending/popular post, you gain significant curation reward.

The reverse auction is the counter-effective mechanism to strike a balance between the "early voter's advantage" and "curating after reading". This has been designed considering the fact that the average time to read a post in Steem Blockchain is 5 to 6 mins.

You can gain significant curation reward on the basis of:-

  • Time of upvote(be an early voter)
  • Position of upvote(preferably before a whale's vote, or at least the follow through votes after you should be bigger than your vote)
  • First voter's Band($0-$1) in a post.(if you remain in that band, you can gain 100% curation reward or more even on moderate-quality post)

And this also happens to a post at 6days 12hrs+, the curation reward drops in percentage as the post age above 6days 12hrs.

There is no reduction in curation reward in the last 12 hrs of a post(of the 7 days). It appears like that because the upvote value itself depletes in the final 12 hrs of a post. And curation reward always derives its value from the upvote value. So curation reward from a reduced upvote value will always be lower.

Thank you.
