I'm very happy to participate fully in this week's lecture mentored by our wonderful and kind crypto-professor @yohan2on which centered on theAPPLICATION OF BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY TO THE MEDICAL SERVICES.
This post will be centered on the homework tasks given as stated below:
RESEARCH AND DISCUSS THE POTENTIAL APPLICATION OF BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY TO HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY
INTRODUCTION
Blockchain technology have modernized several human endeavors as it's technological advancements have changed the traditional methods of doing those things. Financial services, data management, IOT, food services etc have been enhanced with the positive impact of the Blockchain technology. In medical services, the application of Blockchain technology are highly anticipated and can improve the quality of health care services and products. Complex clinical data are generated, managed securely and privately with the help of Blockchain technology. For health services to be more efficient, updated personal data of the various patients can be effective documented in real-time and processed remotely by several health practitioners. Application of Blockchain technology in various health care set-up with sole aim of promotion of health care services can be encouraged.
In Health care services, clinical data are generated from the health historical data of individual data, which can vary with time and needed to be recorded, accessed and transmitted within the health institutions regularly. The efficient management of these vast clinical data can be cost intensive and challenging as many factors like Security, privacy have been affected negatively on it. Proper diagnosis, wonderful clinical decision-making and treatment can be enhanced, if the clinical data and results of scientific research can be shared within the medical field among the health practitioners more securely, remotely and privately. The problem with the efficient clinical communication between the health practitioners, patients and associated health organizations can be solved with the technological prowess of the Blockchain technology in that data sharing can be effectively, securely and privately-oriented. The clinical data are highly sensitive and ethically governed and should be securely transmitted with the help of Blockchain technology due to the wonderful features of this vital technology.
TENETS OF BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY WITH THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE HEALTH CARE SECTOR
- DECENTRALIZED SYSTEM
In Blockchain technology, there are many nodes/units that interlink with one another. each of these units acts effectively and separately but still interexchanges data within another units in the system. There's no central authority that supervise the system. If health care services are incorporated cryptographically, the relationship between/ or Patients,health practitioners/specialists and organizations can be the units and their activities can be effectively interlinked. Thus, their activities can be enhanced.
- DATA ENCRYPTION
Blockchain technology arrange it's data effectively as blocks of information and securely transmitted it within the network (s) in the encrypted form. Cryptographically, Clinical data which is highly sensitive can be secured and should be privately protected within the system for only where their needs are required. This will solve the limiting factors of clinical data management. Which includes; Security and privacy.
- SCALABILITY
With the processing speed of the Blockchain technology especially the third generation ones, health care services including emergency services can be promptly and huge clinical data can be accessible easily.
- OPEN SOURCE
Blockchain technology are designed to be accessible to everyone freely. Anyone can be admitted into the network too. With this feature, Health education should be accessible to everyone freely.
POTENTIAL APPLICATION OF BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY INTO THE HEALTH CARE SECTOR
Blockchain technology have great technological potentials which can be implemented favourably into the health care services and it's results will be positive. Other human activities like Financial sectors, entertainment, education and artistic properties etc have been positive empowered with the Blockchain technology. All the fields of medical services including the Genomics , neuroscience, telemedicine, tele-monitoring etc can witness the technological advancement of the Blockchain technology. These areas of the medical field can be enhanced with the Blockchain technology in this ways.
- BLOCKCHAINS IN ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORD
The digitalization of the health records have been very helpful because it makes it easy to be accessible and sharing. Better health records serves as a basis for proper diagnosis and treatment since clinical decision-making process anchored basically on the historical personal even family data of the patients.
In the various health institutions and centres, a patient have their records scattered. There's a needs to harmonies these records, not on a central platform where the huge data will be generated from many of patients can't be easily accessible and can be exposed to Security breaches. With the help of Blockchain technology, it's features can be utilized as the data can be safely compiled in real-time and updated as a decentralized system. the privacy and sensitive of those health will be protected cryptographically. The health records of patients can be long term project which can be periodically reviewed and updated too. For instance, In 2016, Estonian Leaders digitizes their national medical records as blockchain backed health project where 95% of the citizens have their health records updated from their birth. These records are very vital and distributed evenly among the health practitioners with the identity of those patients Highly protected. Their health care services are rendered optimally and Health insurance are at the top notched because of the technological advancement of the Blockchain networks.
- BLOCKCHAINS IN CLINICAL RESEARCH
Clinical scientists and researchers are working very hard to find solutions to our various health challenges. Their findings and data are highly sensitive and needed to be stored and shared among their peers to makes a valid clinical decision in order to produce vaccines and other effective treatment gadgets. But their data faced a lot of challenges which have rendered their efforts worthless. But with blockchain technology, their data Security, privacy, sensitivity and integrity will be promoted and protected as they conducts, stores, shares and encourage their clinical studies.
In Ethereum platform, a smart contract or protocols can be designed to handle the clinical data management and effective enrollment of the patients with their identities keep privately. With this, patient's records and clinical findings can be tracked, stored in such a way that is secured, publicly verifiable and immutable.
- BLOCKCHAINS IN NEUROSCIENCE
Artificial intelligence and cases of IOT are serious improving humanity. Humans are developing themselves mentally to be able to interact with the surrounding infrastructures mechanically with a smartness. Brain activities can be interpreted and translated as mental commands, which can control their external devices for greater good. Human brain activities and patterns Which is electrical in nature can be read with the help of neutral interface devices equipped with highly sensitive sensors, computer chips and wireless communication gadgets. Blockchain technological abilities can be utilized here too as a person with this neutral interface devices attached to any part of the head connected with his/her brain cells where it's signals can be read and recorded as huge data. A complex algorithm can be designed cryptographically with that huge data generated. In 2017, A company, Neurogress registered in Geneva, developed neutral-control system stimulated with blockchain networks, which enable the users to control robotic arm, IOT, drones and other smart appliances with their own thoughts. This neutral-control system have improved the
Prosthetic solutions for injured patients as they can enjoy their "new normal" lives. To promote their data Security and privacy, as this sensitive and complex data are generated from their users. Neurogress which is ethically governed uses the Blockchain technology to record, stores and process these data to be resistance to hacking attacks.
- BLOCKCHAINS IN MEDICAL CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES
There are many nefarious activities that are going on in the medical services. These criminal activities are against humanity and have causes numerous deaths and untold sufferings. These bad activities includes fake drugs and health equipments, cases of stolen newborns babies, adulterated foods etc. Although Governments of the world have been fighting against these crimes but it keeps increasing. With the help of Blockchain technology, the supply chain of these vital health products and equipment can be effectively and securely managed. A system backed with transparent, immutable and Public verifiably Blockchain networks can be operational so that fake and injurious health products and equipments can be detected and not be found again within the supply chain from the producers to the users/patients in the entire fields of medicine. Also, the records of infants are safely recorded too to avoid the identity thefts.
CONCLUSION
Blockchain technological advancement have been very innovative in various human endeavors and health care services can be enhanced positively with it's potentials but there are still many limiting factors as it is still an emerging technology that invite more researches.
However, with the P2P model of the Blockchain technology, the health care services can be based on the peer to peer integrated complex medical services composed of Cryptographic functions to solve the traditional methods of healthcare data sharing challenges with a well distributed consensus algorithm thereby improving the health care services.
In summary, The application of Blockchain technology in the medical services can be utilized in these following ways;
- SECURE AND SAFE HEALTH CARE DATA TRANSMISSION.
- BIOMEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
- E - HEALTH DATA SHARING
- CLINICAL DECISION-MAKING PROCESS
- MEDICAL FOLLOW UP EXERCISES etc.
