How do you store/secure your keys?

In these case, there are many ways one can secure his or her keys. Securing our keys is a very important thing to do. As professor @sapwood stated, that storing our keys offline is the most safest thing to do in othet to secure our keys. Although when it comes to centralized platform, its possible to retrieve our keys when its being misplaced or lost. You have third party who will help you on recovering your keys. In other word, in a decentralized platform, when your keys and password are being misplaced or lost, that means is gone forever, you can't retrieve it. When we talk about storing keys offline, is all about copying them on a notebook and you can also print it out, laminate it and keep it in a safer place.

Although, some always secure their keys on their mobile devices or computer And also some save it as draft in their email address, which is good but not highly/well secured. A hacker can have access to your mobile devices, unfortunately, might also get access to your private keys, which means your crypto assets are gone, because transactions can be done with private keys. For me, the best thing to do is, store some part of the keys on your mobile devices, then store some offline, even when the hacker gets access to your mobile device, the hacker won't have acesss to your crypto wallets due to the keys are not fully stored on your device. The safest way to secure your keys is backing up the keys in your mind.

What are the different forms of Private Key(Examples/Screenshot)?

We have 3 different forms of private keys
Whichi is ;

  • MNEMONIC
In Mnemonic keys, it comes as a group of random words which we can be able to read out. The words usually appears while registering with tronlink wallet Which comes with 12 words. When these words appears, you will be asked to back them up by copying it some where else, because it will also be needed. Mnemonic keys can also be used in restoring wallets and also you can reset choosen password and create address.

This is how it appears
  • PRIVATE KEY
The private key, it comes in a combination of alphabets or arithmetical numbers and letters. The private key can be use to access wallets. It was formed in a specific way. Picture below shows how private key looks like.

  • KEY STORE FILE
Key store files is the most scattered private key. Keystore is mostly stored online because, is very hard to write down on a paper. Mistake might occur while copying it on a paper, which will be a total waste. Save it as draft on your email address or better still take a screenshot of it and store it in a place you think is safer for you. Key store file looks like this.

Then after that, click on "install", it will start installing. When it gets done, click on open, The it will lead you the tron link wallet app then start the registration.

STEP 3
Now, the tron link wallet has opened. It has three options, which is

  • CREATE ACCOUNT
  • IMPORT ACCOUNT
  • COLD WALLET
When you're clicking "create account", that means you don't have an account on tronlink wallet before. When you click "import account", that means you already have a tron account, so all you have to do is to import the account with your keys. Then "cold wallet" is just offline and its secured. But I'm choosing "create account"" Click on create account.

How do you store the key(Hint- write it down on a notepad, demonstrate it with examples)?

My keys will be stored in a note book. I have written some of the words provided on a note book, then some, on my mind, that is, the one i won't be able to forget. I also save half of the words in my email address, then the other half was written down on another separate notebook.

For example

Which form of the key are you comfortable with to handle your TronLink Wallet? Include Screenshots & hide/blur the sensitive information.

When it comes to choose the key I'm comfortable with to handle My tronlink wallet, among the three keys i have listed here, i will be comfortable with the mnemonic key. Because, its easy to read out and also easy in memorizing Than private key and key store file.

IN CONCLUSION

Security is very important in our everyday life. Storing your keys in a safer place would be the best thing to do in other to secure it beacuse of hackers or maybe forgetting your keys. It's very important we store the keys not just in one place, but rather store it in different places for security reason. I'm so much glad to be part of this lecture. I have learnt a lot on how keys can be secured.

Thank you all for going through my post.
Special regards to professor @sapwood for the amazing lecture.
