Observations:

First of all, when you transfer steem to an exchange, steem will ask for your address and memo. Because the memo identifies your wallet, where your wallet is, and which tokens are going.

True. Not a using a memo to transfer steem from Steemit platform to an exchange will lead to loss of funds that can't be recovered.

I will give an example that when you want to put steem from bianace exchange in steemit wallet, they will also ask you for a memo with address, no transaction will be done without memo.

Using a memo when transfering Steem from an exchange to a Steemit account is optional. It is not necessary to use a memo unless you want to pass a message to the reciever.
