It is my pleasure to submit my homework to professor @wahyunahrul. The last class you taught on Whales, the mover of price, was awesome, and the one you just taught was superb. I have been looking for where to learn about airdrops. I must confess that I have really learnt one or two things. I will cherish this. Thank you, Prof. That being said. We were asked to answer eight (8) questions. The questions are listed below.
  1. What do you think about Airdrop in cryptocurrency?
  2. How can we know about an Airdrop event so that we can participate?
  3. Where are Airdrop events often held?
  4. Are all Airdrop events free from scams? Otherwise, how can we avoid the scam?
  5. Have you ever participated in a cryptocurrency Airdrop event? If so, then explain. Meanwhile, if you have never participated but have heard of the Airdrop event, then explain it. (Show proof with screenshot)
  6. Give and explain an example of an Airdrop event that has passed and the airdrop was successful. Then give one more example that has been proven to be a fraud. (It is not allowed to take the example that has been taken in question number 5).
  7. Look for examples of ongoing Airdrop events, make an analysis that proves that the Airdrop of your choice is good. (Screenshot required).
  8. Explain the steps to participate in the Airdrop of your choice. (Screenshot required).

So, I will be answering the questions based on my understanding of the lecture and my personal research on the topic.

1. What do you think about Airdrop in cryptocurrency?

IMG-20210705-WA0034.jpg

Airdrop is an event in which cryptocurrency is given out for free to participants to have some amount of the coins. Airdrop is usually done when a cryptocurrency has not come to limelight. The organizers of the cryptocurrency usually look for a way to promote their coins and as such, they will want to give cryptocurrency to people for free.

Airdrops aim to take advantage of network effect by engaging existing holders of a particular blockchain-based currency, such as Bitcoin or Ethereum in their currency or project

This event is usually done to make sure people invest in the coin. What the organisers normally do is to give the coin for free. They may ask the participants to register on their website or fill documents online containing their details such as email and the like. This will help the organizers to give them update about the cryptocurrency. There are always rules laid down that will serve as a guide for the participants

2. How can we know about an Airdrop event so that we can participate?

IMG-20210705-WA0034.jpg

Most of the airdrop event are always preceded the launching time. The event is always published on the website of the organizers and disseminate to all social media.
So in essence, most of the airdrops I have heard is through social media.

News of some event are dropped on telegram group and WhatsApp group where people who are interested in airdrops are.

Example of a group that I joined in telegram where the Admins do share news of latest airdrop and the ones on going is shown in the snapshot below:

IMG-20210714-WA0007.jpg

A Telegram Group Where News of Airdrops are shared

Another way to get to know airdrop event is by reading on the exchange websites. Some exchange websites such as upbit, binance, etc do publish the news of these events.

3. Where are Airdrop events often held?

IMG-20210705-WA0034.jpg

Airdrop event are mostly held on the host or organizers' website. They usually ask participant to register by registering on their website. The details which they collect from their participants are the contacts details such email, phone numbers including the the country code, password and username. The usually reach out to their participants through the contact details they collected from them during the event.

Another place where airdrop events is held is Google form or filling of document. This process help the organizers to collect as many information as they needed from the participants. Sometimes, after filling the documents, they will ask their participants to share on their social media platforms, so that other people can get to know about the coin.

Some airdrop events utilize Telegram bot. A link is usually sent out to people in order to join the telegram bot. This bot get details of the participants by asking them questions and they will provide answers to it. After the end of supplying the details to bot, it usually tells the participants to refer people in order to get more coin. Although I don't really like airdrops through telegram bot because most of them are not real.

4. Are all Airdrop events free from scams? Otherwise, how can we avoid the scam?

IMG-20210705-WA0034.jpg

Most of airdrops these days are scams. The reason is, many people are looking for ways to take advantage of people.

The are what we can do in order not to fall victim of wrong airdrops or people who are trying to take advantage of others to dupe them. Now the first thing to do when we hear about an airdrop is to go read about it. We should find out how real it is by taking in depth search on the history of the organizers. Do they really have the knowledge of cryptocurrency? Are they committed to the project? Have they done anything in the past that was successful. What is the purpose of creating the airdrop? What is the main reason for organizing the airdrop? All these questions are very important. There is a saying that "if the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable." If you don't know the purpose for organizing it, you may get duped.

It's not only that we should read about the project extensively. What are the rules guiding the project, is it something we can bear? By reading the rules, one will get a lot of information regarding the airdrop. If it is real, you will know and if it is fraudulent activity you will know.

I participated in airdrop event on Feb 26, 2020.
The name of the airdrop is Marcopolo Protocol Airdrop. MAPC
Below is the snapshot of the website where the airdrop was announced.

My brother sent it to me to register for via WhatsApp.
Below is the snapshot of of the of the message he sent to me on the said date.

News of the Airdrop on WhatsApp

As it can be seen from the snapshot, there is a link included in the message sent to me. I clicked the link to participate in the airdrop. When I clicked it, it showed a telegram bot.

Below is the screenshot of the bot where the airdrop was held.

IMG-20210714-WA0022.jpg

Marcopolo Telegram bot

As I said earlier the name of the airdrop is Marcopolo Protocol Airdrop (MAPC). The the organizer promised to give 230MAPC and 50MAPC for each person you referred which can be withdrawn immediately you complete the task on the telegram bot.
The steps for the airdrop are:

  • Chat with Marcopolo telegram bot.
  • complete the captcha
  • Join the telegram group and channel
  • Complete the other tasks (Tasks such refer a friend, share it on a social media platform etc
  • You get 230MAPC

After these steps are taken, the organizer said we can withdraw our MAPC by going to Marco pay exchange App. and convert it to MAP/USDT and it can now be withdrawn.
But up till today, I still have not be able to withdraw anything.

6. Give and explain an example of an Airdrop event that has passed and the airdrop was successful. Then give one more example that has been proven to be a fraud. (It is not allowed to take the example that has been taken in question number 5).

IMG-20210705-WA0034.jpg

An example of an Airdrop that has been Successful

The name of the coin I participated that was successful is Ecoin. Early last year, to be precised, on the 21st of February, 2020. I joined the airdrop. Although the Airdrop is still on but only by referral. Anyone who still joins Ecoin will receive some amount of coins. And the person who refers a friend can still earn coins, too.

I joined the airdrop from the message a friend shared on one of the groups I belong to on WhatsApp. And I did all the procedures they asked o do then. We registered our names and email on their website. And as it was promised, at the time of launching the Ecoin I received my portion of the coin.

Below is the screenshot of the Ecoin website

IMG-20210714-WA0035.jpg

Ecoin is one the airdrop that was rampant in the year 2020. Many people participated in the event of the airdrop.

IMG-20210714-WA0034.jpg

From this snapshot above, you can see the time I joined Ecoin. It was on the 21st of February. 2020.
Since then, many people have been investing on the coin.

Below the screenshot of the number of coins I was given then and the current value of the coin

IMG-20210714-WA0033.jpg

As it can be seen from the snapshot:
Amount of the coin received then = 1250Ecoins
Current Value of the coin = $2.0

An example of the Airdrop that has been Proved to be Fraud

The name of the coin I participated in that has been proved to be fraud is winstex. Just like Ecoin that was successful, we were directed to their website to register with our names and email.
There's a telegram group for the coin then. Although I have removed myself from the group. But for the purpose of this write up, I had to go and search for the group and make a snapshot of the group.
The snapshot below shows the telegram group for winstex.

IMG-20210714-WA0040.jpg

During the time of the airdrop, many people joined the group, performed every task we were told to perform.
On the website, they asked us to share the news (there are spaces for that) on social media like facebbook, Twitter, and Instagram. For each task we perform, they would give us 100Winstex depending on how difficult the task is though. There are some tasks which they rewarded is more than 100.
Because I was eager to withdraw my coins to trust wallet, they said I must do verification which I didn't have valid ID card then. Though I had voter's card but they didn't accept it. I had to go and do International national passport, although I needed the passport, too but that was what prompted me to get the passport very quick.

Below is the snapshot of the coin on trust wallet which has now value.

IMG-20210714-WA0039.jpg

I did this airdrop even before Ecoin. Till now, it has not had any value.

IMG-20210705-WA0034.jpg

7. Look for examples of ongoing Airdrop events, make an analysis that proves that the Airdrop of your choice is good. (Screenshot required).

IMG-20210705-WA0034.jpg

One of the ongoing airdrop events is Pi (π) network. Pi network is an inclusive peer top peer digital currency. It is the first digital currency you can mine on your phone. Pi network airdrop is in the form of mining. The tokens are earned by mining on the phone app.
Below is the screenshot of the website of pi network where the news of the Airdrop can be assessed.

IMG-20210714-WA0043.jpg

By clicking the drop down box, there are features which is one interest to me. Anytime I visit any website, what I usually click is drop down box to know the features that available.

So I clicked on the drop down box. Below is the screenshot

IMG-20210714-WA0051.jpg

These features will appear after clicking on the drop down box

IMG-20210714-WA0053.jpg

In the features, I'm interested in knowing the team, the platform and how Pi works. I believe if I know the team, I will get to know more about each of the individual. I will know if they are experienced, if they have proven work they have done before, if they have been successful on any task before and many more.
So I clicked the team

IMG-20210714-WA0050.jpg

IMG-20210714-WA0052.jpg

As it can be seen from the snapshot, the head of the technology is Dr. Nickolas Kokkalis and the head of product is Dr. Chengdiao Fao.

Nickolas Kokkalis:

Stanford PhD and instructor of Stanford’s first decentralized applications class; combining distributed systems and human computer interaction to bring cryptocurrency to everyday people.

Chengdiao Fao:

Stanford PhD in Computational Anthropology harnessing social computing to unlock human potential on a global scale.

Reading about the team, who they are and what they have done, it is a sign that they are capable of creating the coin and organizing the airdrop.
You can click on the link below to read more about the team and their qualifications Click here

Also, by clicking on the "platform," some important information can be assessed.

IMG-20210714-WA0055.jpg

The screenshot shows the Pi white paper which is one of the most important things a cryptocurrency should make visible. So this is also a proof that pi network airdrop is a good one. Details of what the white papers entails can be seen Here

How the Pi works can also be seen. Details of the coins, how they intend to achieve their objectives and everything is also made visible for the populace. You can tap Here to read how it works.
In conclusion, all these things visible to the populace and clear enough is a reason to make me believe that the Pi airdrop is good.

IMG-20210705-WA0034.jpg

8. Explain the steps to participate in the Airdrop of your choice. (Screenshot required).

IMG-20210705-WA0034.jpg

Below are the steps to take to participate in the Pi network mining.
✓ Firstly, you need to visit the website, https://minepi.com. You can explore the site and read about all I have explained above in question 7.
✓ Then, the next step is to download the Pi App. On the home page, you will see where an icon for download is placed. Click on it.
See the snapshot below for a guide

IMG-20210714-WA0057.jpg

✓ the next step is to install the app. Just like all other app, you install it.

✓ After installing the app, then locate the the app on your mobile phone.

IMG-20210714-WA0059.jpg

✓ You then sign up with your either Facebook or email and verify your phone number.

Now can start mining. Now, because I have sign up mine, I just need to open it. Let me show you how you will be mining Pi.
Once you open the Pi App, a page will display. See the snapshot below to see the page I am talking about.

IMG-20210714-WA0061.jpg

The area in a rectangular box shows that I am currently mining and the mining rate/hr is 0.12π/h. The are box with green rectangular box shows my all time earning so far.

So , for you who is just joining, you are going to click the area circled in red color and click mine.

IMG-20210714-WA0062.jpg

Mining is done once in every 24hrs. It means you are going to be clicking "mine" every 24hours. The advantage of this is that you can close the tab after clicking the mining and it doesn't consume battery.
You can open the chat box too and chat with people, your referrals and some other people.

IMG-20210705-WA0034.jpg

Conclusion

IMG-20210705-WA0034.jpg

Airdrops are event where tokens or coins are giving to people free of charge. Airdrops event are always held in order to promote the coins. When people hear about the coin and that the organizers are willing to give some coins free of charge, people will invest in the coin. So basically airdrop event is usually done to attract the investors and to let the entire populace know about the coins.

Although, free coins can be given during the Airdrop event, it is also important to know that some fraudster can dupe people. It is very pertinent to know and read about airdrops before participating. The reason is, many of the airdrops out there are fake. Fraudster are interested in taking little you have from you. It is therefore better not to participate in any airdrops you are not sure if the organizers seem not to be real than participating and rubbed you.
