Steemit Crypto Academy Season 2 Week 4 || Tokens Parte2: ERC-20 and ERC-721 by @pelon53

Ethereum is an open source platform, born in 2015 by the hand of Vitalik Buterin, a young Russian programmer, after raising more than USD 18,000,000 in an ICO held the previous year.

Buterin, who moved with his parents to Canada at the age of six and could be described as a "child prodigy", observed in Bitcoin certain shortcomings that led him to develop his own technology, with a native cryptocurrency called Ether.

Ethereum is a decentralized platform that, through smart contracts, allows developers to create new applications under different standards, including ERC-20, used for tradable tokens that are mainly used as means of payment; and the ERC-721 standard, for the so-called non-fungible tokens, a type of tokens characterized by their uniqueness.

Currently, Ether ranks second among cryptoassets by market capitalization, second only to its predecessor, Bitcoin; and its open source technology, coupled with smart contracts, has made it a favorite for the development of new projects within the blockchain.

What are ERC-1155 tokens?

The ERC-1155 is the new standard within the Ethereum platform that will provide programmers with a number of tools and functions designed to enhance the development of new projects.

The ERC-20 tokens, or fungible tokens, are the most common within the blockchain due to their great versatility: they can be used as an alternative method of payment to acquire goods or cancel services inside or outside the cryptographic universe, generate income through their purchase and sale in the market, and also, through ICO, Initial Coin Offerings, serve to raise funds to finance new projects. It is so popular that in Etherscan, an exclusive explorer and analysis platform for Ethereum, there are currently more than 395,000 tokens listed.

The tokens developed under the ERC-721 standard, also known as non-fungible tokens, have qualities that make them unique and unrepeatable, unlike the ERC-20 tokens. They are collectible tokens that can be exchanged, and their use is fundamentally linked to the art world.

However, both tokens present problems. In the case of the ERC-20 tokens, their major drawback is associated with their poor "reactivity" to certain events, such as the fact that, when a user makes a transfer to an incorrect address due to an involuntary error, the transferred tokens are lost forever and cannot be recovered.

On the other hand, for ERC-721 tokens, obtaining a token identifier directly is mission impossible, making transactions more difficult. For example, if a person has in his possession a list of X amount of tokens that he wishes to transfer to another user, X transactions must be made instead of only one, with their respective commission charges, increasing the costs for the user; besides saturating the platform due to the number of operations required.

For the reasons described above, the ERC-1155 standard was born, which offers the possibility of creating both fungible and non-fungible tokens in the same smart contract.

ERC-1155 tokens bring together the best of both worlds: they can function as ERC-20 tokens, as ERC-721 tokens, or even assume the functions of both simultaneously, but without the limitations or drawbacks of both.

ERC-1155 tokens have the following structure:

  • Name: unlike ERC-20 and ERC-721 tokens, tokens developed under the ERC-1155 standard do not have a name, thus avoiding storing data that saturates the network.

  • Symbol: is not included because it is not relevant for identifying general commodities or goods. Its use is more useful in cryptocurrency trading.

This is a recently created standard and for the moment its use is mainly focused on gaming platforms; however, due to its innovative features, its use is expected to become widespread in the short and medium term.

ERC-721 Token Quantity Verification

To know the number of ERC-721 tokens that exist to date, you must access the platform Etherscan, in my particular case, I do it from my cell phone, so probably the screenshots are going to differ from a PC or laptop.

On the top right, click on the 3 horizontal lines and a new menu will be displayed.

Once the menu has been displayed, click on the Tokens option located in the third line of the left column.

Next a sub-menu is presented that includes 4 options, and this time as we are interested in knowing the amount of ERC-721 tokens existing up to the moment, we choose the third option: ERC721 Top Tokens.

Finally, we have the information we were looking for: by 11:28 pm Venezuelan Legal Time on Wednesday 05-05-2021, there are a total of 11,106 tokens created under the ERC-721 standard.

What are TRC20 tokens?

The TRC20 token is a technical standard that makes use of smart contracts on the TRON blockchain (TRX) for the development of new projects. To mint new tokens under this standard, the TRON Virtual Machine (TVM) is employed. Assets issued in this way, not only have the functions of the ERC-20 of the Ethereum network, but are compatible with it.

The best known TRC20 token is USDT for Tether, a stable coin that always maintains a value around one US dollar, and is ranked sixth on Coin Market Cap by market capitalization.

Developments in TRON have a high degree of efficiency, compared to other networks that make use of smart contracts, particularly in cost.

The tokens created under the TRC20 standard are among the most desirable on the market and allow traders and investors to transact in a secure and risk-free manner, making them a primary target for crypto-enthusiasts around the world.

TRC20 Token Quantity Verification

To find out the number of TRC20 tokens that exist to date, one must access the Tronscam platform, a browser similar to Etherscan, but exclusive to the TRON community.

As was done above to verify the number of ERC-721 tokens, the procedure is quite similar.

In the upper right corner, click on the 3 horizontal lines and a new menu will be displayed.

Below is a sub-menu that includes several options. In this opportunity we access the "Token Overview" option that will direct us to a new screen where the tokens created so far under the various standards of the TRON network are displayed.

At this point, the screen shows the total amount of tokens developed under the TRC10, TRC20 and TRC721 standards, however, our intention is to know the amount of TRC20 tokens, so the corresponding option must be pressed.

We finally agreed to the requested information, bringing the total number of TRC20 tokens to 15,978 at the time of this writing.

Conclusions

  • The Ethereum platform, through its smart contracts, allows developers to mint new tokens under the ERC-20, ERC-721 and more recently, ERC-1155 standards, which has made it the most popular choice for new projects within the crypto universe.

  • The ERC-1155 standard was created as a response to the failures of the ERC-20 protocols, intended for the issuance of fungible tokens, and ERC-721 for non-fungible tokens, allowing programmers to create tokens of one modality or the other, within the same smart contract and not in separate contracts.

  • TRC20 tokens are issued using the Virtual Machine of the TRON network and are compatible with ERC-20 tokens created in the Ethereum network.
