Stablecoins are born due to the need for investors to keep their investments safe against fluctuations in cryptocurrencies by maintaining their balances in fiat currencies without having to withdraw funds from exchanges to their bank accounts or maintain balances on exchanges.

And it is that no matter what currency or fiat value has been chosen, a stablecoin will maintain the relationship with which it was created. That is the main difference of stablecoins with the rest of cryptocurrencies whose volatility is practically their nature.

The first stablecoin to be created was USD Tether and it remains the world's best-selling stablecoin. However, it has had to overcome many challenges due to the lack of transparency and governance, receiving much criticism and mistrust from investors and users.

In September 2017, Coinbase, in collaboration with Círcle, formed the Center consortium which is responsible for the technology behind USDC.
