Steemit Crypto Academy Week 6 Task: Steem Blockchain(Convergent Linear Reward) | lecture by @sapwood

in SteemitCryptoAcademy3 years ago (edited)
Good day, everyone. It’s another wonderful time to be here at the Steemit crypto academy. I read the lecture of the crypto professor @sapwood as he discussed Steem Blockchain (Convergent Linear). This is a powerful lecture and I will attend to the task associated with the lecture.

The lecture covered the reward curve been used by the Steem blockchain which is Convergent Linear equation, f(x) = x2/(x+1) and how this has improved curation reward balancing the economic and social aspects on the Steem blockchain and in addition better content discovery on Steemit. There are some tasks associated with the lecture and all will be taken care of in this context.

What are the economic & social ramifications of self-upvote in Steem Blockchain? Do you gain better curation rewards by upvoting others as compared to self-upvote? (Include real examples)

Self-voting is a bad practice which can only render a content a poor one and in that case retained it at the sub-linear zone. Self-voted contents are generally considered poor contents and has no social importance as such post doesn’t reach the entire community because they are just retained at the sub-linear zone. Considering the economic part of it, Self-voted contents can only bring a little reward since it was unable to make any good social impact on the community.

Better content discovery is aided by curation on contents with high quality and thereby push it to the top or trending contents in a community rendering such contents useful for other users to learn from, increasing its social impact and also brings in more worthy curation on the post which in return reward the author and curators heavily for the good job. Such economic and social benefits are missing from self-voted contents and as such self-voting should not be considered an option of curation at all.

Better curation rewards are achieved by upvoting others quality contents as compared to self-voting. I’ve self-voted my contents before and I will be showing thecuration rewards from my self-voted content and upvote on others’ contents.

Self-voted content

The above screenshot shows my self-vote activity on my comment on a post, with upvote value $0.02 and the curation reward is just 0.026 SP.

Upvote on other user content

The screenshot was an upvote I made on professor @yohan2on post at the same effective Steem power (SP), voting power, and upvote value ($0.02) with the first screenshot but in this one, $0.04 impact was made on the post because it has other curators with appreciable stake-weighty mechanism (SP) on it and It’s giving me a curation reward of 0.207 SP which is by far bigger than my self-voted content.

What is the difference between isolated judgment and community judgment in curation? How do you adapt to community judgment on quality content in Steem Blockchain? Does that bring economic incentive for you? If yes, explain with real examples, (include screenshots and compare them with your isolated judgment)?

Isolated judgment is a decision I made on my own to upvote a content which I believed to be of high quality, at that point I have no other curators on it as it was me that made the decision of upvote, with my upvote value remains just the way it is according to the amount of the SP I possess, while, Community judgment is the process by which I curate highly quality post together with other curators and in this case the upvote value on the post increases and also increases individual curation rewards expected by all curators that upvoted the content.

As curation plays a very important role in better content discovery on the Steem blockchain such that after curation, the quality posts are shown on the trending contents of the community enabling other users to learn from it and also curate such contents. Trending posts in a community is the best way to adapt to community judgment on quality contents in Steem Blockchain after it must have received quality upvotes from curators that found it worthy.

Community judgment brings better upvote value and curation rewards on a quality content compared to isolated judgment. I will be showing this in the screenshots below.

Isolated judgment

The screenshot above shows my upvote value on a new content on the Steemit crypto academy that I found useful and of high quality. I upvoted it with my upvote value been $0.02.This is an isolated judgment by me. The curation reward expected is 0.022 SP and shown below.

Community judgment- After upvote

Screenshot 1 above shows a post of professor @besticofinder I found at trending contents on the Steemit crypto academy with the total upvotes value of $59.86 on it.From Screenshot 2, I upvoted it and the total upvote value on it turned to $59.92, that’s $0.04 difference and remember my upvote value is just $0.02 but community judgment has increased my upvote impact value so therefore my curation reward will be increased. I have the curation reward expected to be 0.023 SP which is greater than my isolated judgment.

Community judgment- Expected curation reward

Go to Steemworld.org, check your Upvote value( at the current SP, VP). Take a screenshot. Then go to the Steemit trending page, find a post with a payout of more than $10 but less than $50(Age less than 6 Days 12 hrs). Upvote it. Take screenshots before and after upvote. Similarly, go to another post on the Trending page, find a post with a payout of more than $100( Age less than 6 Days 12 Hrs). Upvote it. Take screenshots before and after upvote. Tell the differences between the two. Which one has produced a greater Upvote value & Curation reward for you with the same resources(SP, VP)? Explain?

I navigated to steemworld.org. With my effective SP, I have upvote value to be $0.02.

1615985761533.png

My upvote value $0.02

For the post with an existing payout of $29.51 becomes $29.64 after I upvoted it. With that, my upvote value on that post is $0.13 which could not be achieved with isolation judgment. I will it in screenshots below. (Note: The post is less than 6days 12hrs).

1615985820861.png

Before my upvote- $29.51

1615985881701.png

After my upvote- $29.64 (+$0.13)

To calculate my expected curation reward- PCreward = 1/2 * √PT * (√P1 - √P0)∆t

Where, PT = Post payout after at the end of 7 days.

P1 = Post payout after upvote

P0 = Post payout before upvote

∆t = 1, for I votes after 5mins.

Therefore, PCreward = 1/2 * √29.64 * (√29.64 - √29.51) = $0.033

My curation reward for this = $0.033

Also for the post with an initial payout of $258.53 increased to $259 (increased with $0.47) after I upvoted it and it will be shown in screenshots below. (Note: The post is less than 6days 12hrs).

1615985938633.png

Before my upvote- $258.53

1615986038470.png

After my upvote- $259.00(+$0.47)

To calculate my expected curation reward for this following the same method- PCreward = 1/2 * √PT * (√P1 - √P0)∆t

Where, PT = Post payout after at the end of 7 days.

P1 = Post payout after upvote

P0 = Post payout before upvote

∆t = 1, for I votes after 5mins.

Therefore, PCreward = 1/2 * √259 * (√259- √258.53) = $0.161

My curation reward for this = $0.161

Reward difference

It is evident that the second post with the payout value of $259 gave me much upvote value and curation reward than the first one because of the power of community judgment and linear convergence as curation rewards move towards linear when the overall SP of curators that upvoted a quality content hit 2.5 million SP and above. Isolated judgment can't give such.

In conclusion, it is important to shun the act of self-vote as it adds nothing to the community socially and little is expected for you economically. Embracing community judgment will enhance better discovery of quality contents, give you more curation rewards and overall make Steemit a better place socially as it aims. Thanks to professor @sapwood for this great lecture and I look forward to learn more subsequently.
