Segwit Bitcoin Network or Legacy Bitcoin Network, which do you prefer and why? [@gbenga]
After going through the class of @gbenga, I was able to understand more about Bitcoin, the Bitcoin Network, and how long a Bitcoin block takes to be produced. Thanks a lot for the lecture @gbenga and every other professor in the steemit crypto academy.
I started transacting Bitcoin some years ago and I used the Legacy Bitcoin Network which was the original Network, I got so used to it and then, there was a new type of Bitcoin network, SegWit.
Initially, I understood SegWit to be the newer Bitcoin address format with a lower fee but after the crypto academy class, I understood more about the Bitcoin Network.
What Is SegWit?
Segregated Witness (SegWit) is the upgrade to the bitcoin network that separates the transaction signature in a transaction thereby increases the amount of transaction data that can be processed in one block as a result of the reduced/separated signature. With Segwit, there is a reduction in the size of the transaction signature in a block thereby allowing for more transactions to be stored on each block. Segwit is backward compatible which makes it possible to send Bitcoin from a Segwit network to a Legacy network.
Differentiating the bitcoin Network Address
There are currently three types of Bitcoin Addresses as regards the Upgrade/soft fork on the Bitcoin Blockchain. the original Bitcoin address starts with "1" while the Segwit bitcoin address is in two forms, Native SegWit address starts with "bc1 " while P2SH nested SegWit starts with "3". All networks function on the same blockchain.
What is your preference?
Sincerely, I would use the two networks depending on the situation I find myself in. If I am to send on the basis of speed, I would prefer a SegWit address, and in some cases, I will prefer to use a lightning network (this is not on the Bitcoin blockchain, it is a network created between two or more parties especially exchanges.) In the case where I can only send to Legacy wallet, I will use the legacy (original) Bitcoin network.
Why I do not always go with Segwit
Not all wallets support SegWit since it was a soft fork and it isn't mandatory for everyone to support the network and with this, one has to be sure that the wallet being sent to uses a SegWit address.
Great work done... I hope to see you in my subsequent classes.
