Generally, the world is driving towards digital things, as such blockchain technology and the Internet of Things (IoT) are the innovation in this 21st century which has made life easier. Hence, the Internet of Things refers to a system that involves connecting devices through a wireless network.

It has to do with a network that is involved with physical objects surrounded by sensors, software that is connected to the internet. These devices are embedded with sensors that help connect with the internet and good communication between the object and the Internet. Examples of IoT and its application are as follows;

  • Goal line sensor connected in a wristwatch used in a standard football league to detect when there is a goal. This aspect has helped to change lots of arguments in football.

  • connecting your CTV camera to your smartphone.

  • A person with the heart monitor implant

  • Smart lighting( that is lighting your appliances from your mobile phone

  • Waste management from the mobile phone.

Note;

The Internet of things does not only stopped with these fives examples but has been adopted in various sectors like in the standard football leagues, agriculture, health sectors, environmental sector, as well as in the car, and our various homes.

Explain why the future Internet of Things depends on Blockchain.

However, before I proceed further, let's check out the future of loT and how it depends on the blockchain.

THE FUTURE OF IOT AND HOW IT DEPENDS ON THE BLOCKCHAIN

If we look at technological advancement we will notice that there are lots of changes as compared to ten years ago. Though, the motive of this innovation is to eliminate stress and save time. Hence, the using artificial intelligence has been adopted by humans as such made the use of IoT rampant.

Well, the reasons the IoT are rampant is as a result of how humans depend on the information from the IoT and believe it provides better and accurate information then tends to gain massive adoption by the day.

Broadly speaking, the use of IoT is good but has some great lapses which can be served as a disadvantage. Remember, the more things become popular, the more the challenges increase. Although there are perfect remedies to reduce these IoT challenges, and the technology that can offer such is called the Blockchain.

Blockchain technology is a protocol whereby the transferred data are unchangeable, which is stored on a distributed digital ledger. Blockchain technology makes use of cryptography which help to secure data via the encryption and decryption process.

For instance; First, the data sent is encrypted with the use of special keys like the private keys by the sender, and it can only be decrypted by the receiver using a related key like the public key of that private key. Therefore, the fundamental attributes of blockchain are its nature of Immutable and distribution of the ledger.

Let's check out the possible challenges of IoT, and the respective remedy the blockchain can provide. That's how the future Internet of Things depends on Blockchain.

Security Aspect of the IoT

The IoT provides better and more accurate information which is great but can be prone to hack due to its nature not to decrypt information. Remember, there is a high rate of hackers in this 21st century, as such a hacker can hack confidential information.

Remedy;
Blockchain technology possesses cryptography which aids in securing data with encryption and decryption. That's the sender lock the data with the use of a cryptographic key like the private key, and the recipient unlock the data with the use of a related cryptographic key like the public key. In short, the blockchain will protect the IoT from attacks.

Scalability Aspect of the IoT

It is always said that any enterprises that are increasing rapidly should fully pay special attention to scalability most especially when it comes to hardware and software. Hence, one of the flaws the IoT will face in the future is scalability since there will be a massive increase in IoT applications which will affect the efficiency of the system.

Remedy;

The blockchain has a way to handle scalability. Hence, the lead of blockchain technology will make IoT devices hard to scale.

TRUST ASPECT OF IoT

The IoT is not trusted because it can fail us at any given time since the data is controlled by the centralized server. Suppose something went wrong to the central point it means all the data will be affected.

Remedy:

One attribute of blockchain is its immutability of the ledger which entails we can always trust it to be accurate. Hence, with the blockchain tech., the trust aspect of the IoT depends on blockchain since data are no centralised server. Also, the data can not be unchanged or altered.

Therefore, the future of the IoT ecosystem depends on blockchain as it helps to address the security and other potential threats we could face by day.

To illustrate this, I will be using a company named filament which is a good example.

The filament is a technology company that was realised in 2012 by Allison Clift-Jennings. This company is based in Reno, in the state of Nevada, United States. They specialize in manufacturing hardware, software, and designs elaborate blockchain systems for IoT devices.

The major focus of IoT is to designs sophisticated blockchain systems for IoT devices in various industries, construction, manufacturing, transportation and energy, which made them join the largest open-source blockchain for IoT called Enterprise Ethereum Alliance (EEA). Also, they conduct business with other enterprises like Hyperledger Fabric and some car manufacturers.

IoT BLOCKCHAIN USE CASE.

Generally, filament focuses majorly on enterprise blockchain that provides solutions for the IoT, as well as hardware and software. Also, the filament has a blockchain network known as Blocklet and its work is to secure and speed the processing of data(record transactions) directly from IoT applications. Hence, the filament's blockchain solutions promote the security of data(record transactions) in IoT devices.

Filament builds comprehensive blockchain systems for the enterprise and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Its hardware, software, and service solutions allow connected devices and machines to securely interact with and transact value against distributed ledger technology such as a blockchain. Src

Furthermore, one unique about this company is the togetherness with their customer's devices and other connected machines as such provide data of all operations of the company.

The use of IoT devices will keep on growing effectively because it has reduced lots of stress, make work easier, and enhance security. Although IoT has lots of challenges, and the future depends on how the challenges are addressed. However, one of the means to address those challenges is blockchain technology. Hence, future IoT depends on blockchain technology.
