Anakin Skywalker's Character

Has anyone read the novels or read or seen material other than the movies? How do you think Anakin's character was developed in the saga?

If you haven't seen much else but The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, it may strike you as odd how much Anakin has changed between the movies. In The Phantom Menace he seemed to be well-balanced kid with no psychological issues. His mother was obviously a good parent. Anakin seems to be very sure of himself but not arrogant at all and he seems to have no ill will towards anyone.

Based on how Anakin behaves in The Attack of the Clones, something's gone wrong even before his mother's death, which triggered the mass murder of all the sand people by him. Anakin is seriously lacking in patience and he seems to suffer from episodes during which he's not in control of himself.

In Revenge of the Sith, Anakin is much more mature but he seems to be really far on his way from transforming from a balanced nine-year-old into a really disturbed asshole. Granted, come under extraordinary levels of stress towards the end of the movie.

What I found unsatisfying was how little attention was paid to Obi-Wan's failure to essentially bring up Anakin after he lost Qui-Gon Jinn. I believe Anakin's hatred of Obi-Wan wasn't just a product of the Dark Side being some kind of an outside influence messing with his head. Obi-Wan makes several references to his failure with Anakin. The exact nature of said failure is not apparent in the films. Was it caused by the fact that Anakin's ambition and impatient temperament were too much for Obi-Wan to handle? Or was there something else? When we were first introduced to Anakin, he had a great deal of empathy and good will towards others. Did he perceive the fact that he was forced to leave behind his family on Tatoine in slavery and in the middle of violence and squalor as callous disregard for their and therefore his well-being on part of the Jedi order as one would think - but had no constructive way of expressing his natural feelings arising from that because of the Jedi brainwashed him with their rigid philosophy? Are we witnessing the limits of Lucas' skill at developing his characters? Or is there simply too much else going on for the films to focus on this?

It seems to me that the Jedi Order was an organization created for the purpose of preventing a hereditary oligarchy of force sensitive families from forming like the Catholic church was a clerical organization of men who were not allowed to have families of their own. From what I've read, Catholic orphanages were never optimal places for kids to grow. Yet, in Star Wars, a similar organization is supposed to be the good guys.

I think the story would've been more interesting if the shortcomings of the Jedi would've been explored more deeply.
