Steemit engagement contest season 2 week 2
Hello everyone and welcome to another day on blog , it gives me Soo much pleasure to be participating in this week's engagement contest as it offers me the opportunity to display my language and culture to all those who would be reading my blog
Question 1
What is meant by language? Define language in your own words.
Language is any means in which we can use to communicate our thoughts, feelings and wants to another person.
For anything to be considered as a language we must be able to pass information which would be able to be deciphered and understood by the receiver without this such cannot be classified as a language.
Generally for every language they must also exist a group of people who use this language to disseminate information amongst them selves for without people using it to actively communicate between them selves such cannot be regarded as a language.
Question 2
How language connects an individual to his family, glob or specific socieity.
Language plays an important role in the connection of a group of people, this is so because the ability to understand what the next person is saying brings about solidarity and unity among those who can understand themselves.
Family
As a family without the ability to understand what the father or mother is talking about it creates this rift between members as they would not be efficient communication, one may not know what the other is thinking and this could prove disasterous.
Society
A group of community tend to speak the same language due to the fact that they live together and it makes the process of interaction between themselves alot easier.
Imagine trying to buy goods and services in the market and not being able to comprehend what the seller is saying this would be catastrophic for business, but in a situation where both buyers and sellers speak the same language they could easily understand them selves and conduct fair business easily.
Question 3
Which is yours mother tongue? and which languages are spoken and understood in your home other than your mother tongue?
I hail from the eastern part of Nigeria and my mother tongue is Igbo language, it is among the three most prominent language in Nigeria and generally spoken in the eastern part of Nigeria by the Igbo tribe.
Other than Igbo we also speak English and Hausa prominently in my home.
The reason why we speak English is because English is the nationally accepted language in the country basically in all part of the country you are sure to meet people that speak English and this makes it very easy for communicating.
The reason why we speak Hausa is due to the fact that though we are easterners we migrated to the north of the country and in the north of the country Hausa is the prominent language being spoken hence in other to curry favour and efficiently communicate with those in our immediate society we had to learn Hausa language
Question 4
How many languages do you know and how did you learn more than one language?
Presently I am aware of four languages but perfectly fluent in two of this language.
English
English being the national Language in my country, while growing up we were thaught in English hence we had to learn the language.
Igbo
Igbo being my mother tongue and the language spoken so often in my house hold, while growing up my parents only communicated with me in Igbo hence I learnt this language from a very tender age
Hausa
As a result of my family's migration to the northern part of the country environmental factors such as neighbourhood children and those who we interacted with in our daily activities all spoke Hausa hence I was quick to adapt to this language as it enabled me fit in better with the community
French
During the lock down in 2020 I was in need of a distraction so I took learning French as a form of distraction.
I learnt french through the help of an online application called Duolingo.
Question 5
In which language did you study in school to university and which language do you prefer
I studied in English right from my primary school up to my university.
In my country most schools if not majority all teach in English language as it is the official language being spoken in the country.
Given the chance I would still prefer to be thought in English language rather than Igbo or Hausa this is because in the international community English is a more acceptable means of communication and inorder for me to progress later in life I would need to communicate my thoughts and word in the international community.
Studying in either Igbo or Hausa would have greatly limited me in the later years of my life as I would only be able to communicate to a limited number of people.
Question 6
How one language or more than one languages plays an important role in the development of society.?
I believe that more is achieved when there is unity hence a country with one official language is sure to progress better than those with multiple languages being spoken.
When many languages are spoken if prevents free flow of information from one perosn to the next and though this information could be translated from one language to the next some of the meanings of message could get lost in translation.
Looking at the feet Dubai has achieved in the last 6 decades it can be attributed to the fact that they were united, in Dubai one language is spoken as a result of this everyone feels included in the decision making process.
Comparing Dubai to Nigeria which has more mineral resources and more languages we can see how language has restricter Nigeria's development in the sense that those of the Igbo language would always want to make policy that favours them and those of the Hausa language would also want to make policy that favours them hence this has created disunity which has stagnated Thier development.
Question 7
How does culture relate to language?
Culture can be described as the way of life of a group of people, as they are many people on planet earth the distinguishing factor between people can be said to be Thier culture.
Culture is the summation of how individuals live thier life in their day to day activities it includes how they eat, the way the dress, the way the sing, thier religion and most especially Thier language.
Culture and languages can be described as two sides of a coin in the sense that they are both intertwined within them selves as the existence of one's leads to the existence of the other it is practically impossible to have one without the other.
By so saying for every culture they must be a language unique to them so as to differentiate them from other culture.
Question 8
Would you like to prefer writing in your own language at the time of writing posting on steemit, if yes why and if not why not?
Yes I would like to write in my own language
I would like to write in my own language which is Igbo this is because it would be alot easier for me typing and expressing my self and I wouldnt make as much error as I make when I use English language.
My language is very beautiful and I would like those on steemit to experience it, though it is not as popular as English or Arabic it is something I hold very dear to me and cherish
Question 9
If you want to promote your language in the world, how will you do it? and if you already done, then how much success have you achieved?
Promoting my language has always been on mind for a very long time, before colonialism many youths used to freely communicate in Igbo language but since colonialism came to Nigeria and English was made the official language in the country the rate at which Igbo language is being spoken have been slowly decreasing sometimes I worry about the future of the language.
How I would like to promote my language to the world.
Education
I would like to set up schools who would teach students in igb language rather than the popular English language this would provide and alternative for those who would wish to study Igbo language.
Curriculum Change
I would include Igbo language as a compulsory course for all students such that those who are in secondary and university would be made to study Igbo language as a requirement for any degree they wish to study.
Translation application
I would promote the creation of a translation application which would be able to translate books from English to Igbo and from Igbo to English so as to spread the news about Igbo to those who do not understand Igbo.
Entertainment
The promotion of Igbo movies and music would be emphasized on so, encouragijg artist to make songs in Igbo so that the international community can be enlightened on Igbo language.
Conclusion
Thank you very much for organising this awesome contest it has really helped me to express some thoughts I has about language I hope all those who have read this article would equally become enlightened to the Nigerian culture and languages.
I invite @swaylee @ronindboss and @weasell to participate in this contest
You have written so well about Language and it a good thing that you understand 4 languages. I think I would try the duolingo for more of french lesson, so that I won't forget the one I had learnt before. I like how you want to promote your language and it will help this generation to understand more about their language and culture. Thank you for sharing
In my country, language is one of the most powerful tool that is implemented in solving a huge conflicts, because it instills and reminds us of the bond we share as brothers
I agree with you on this, the uniqueness of the various languages is what makes it more beautiful.
Nice article sir and Good luck in this contest
I also to write in my mother Language, the Spanish one. I feel I must show respect to it by sharing through my texts for around the world in order to know that idiom. Get the best success with entry. Regards.
Wow! You have really landed with a beautiful explanations, it is very well understood, you have done it well.
This is Soo true. Language is a way by which people seek to express their culture. So culture and Language are truly intertwined.
This is actually a good way of promoting a Language. Since school is the primary source by which we learn most of the things we know.
This was really an educative post. I wish you the best in the contest. You can also engage with me through My link
I agree with you on the issue of having a single language, if one language was spoken generally in Nigeria, we may never have experienced the crises we are currently facing. Each tribe are doing things in term of tribal favor, but with one language there won't be disunity among people
