Performed during the SINULOG FESTIVAL - the queen of all festivals here in the Philippines in honor to the patron saint of Cebu, Sñr Sto. Niño or the Child Jesus. The festival is annually celebrated every 3rd week of January which attracts around 1 to 2 million people from all over the Philippines every year. This is the most special month of all the devotees of Sñr. Sto. Niño, the child Jesus. The devotees dances their heart-out during the 9 days Novena Mass in Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño to express their devotions and ask the Child Jesus to grant their prayers and petitions.

MEANING OF SINULOG

Sinulog comes from the word " Sulog " which means moving water or water current movement that also describes the forward - backward movement of the Sinulog dance. The dance consists of two steps forward and one step backward, done to the sound of drums. This ritual dance started on the year 1980 and later on became the most popular festival and so on called the " Queen of all Festivals " here in the Philippines.

COSTUMES

One of the main attraction of the Sinulog Festival is the bright and colorful costumes of every participants during the Grand Parade. You will witness the most colorful displays and street dancing.

For the participants it's not just a dance contest rather it's their way of expressing their devotions. Every wave of their hands and every move of their feet they offer it to Sñr. Sto. Niño. And every shout of " Viva Pit Senyor " is their way of expressing their love.

And there it is the only traditional dance I could ever think of as a Cebuano. This religious and traditional dance has been part of my life and all the Cebuanos through-out the years.
