Hello everyone. It's week 2 of the season 2 of the Steemit Engagement Challenge. Week 1 was awesome, although very challenging. Well, it's a challenge.
This is my third entry this week. I have submitted entries to steem4nigeria and steemit azarbijah community. Today, I'm going to be submitting the third entry to Urdu community.
The community has asked us to write on language, how it connects an individual to his family, the society and the globe. I'm going to be writing according to the hints given to us. I urge you to follow me closely.
How language connects an individual to his family, globe or specific society
Like I said above, the contest topic is on language. And we will be looking at it based on the hints given to us by the community. I hope you will find it interesting. Let's get started right away.
What is meant by language? Define language in your own words.
Language is one of the most important things when it comes to relating with one another. Simply put, language is a way of communicating one's ideas, feeling or expression to another person.
Without language, it will be difficult to understand one another. Now, it's pertinent to know that language is more than talking. It also involves signs and gestures.
There are some people that communicate with themselves without them talking or giving any form of sound. Language is beyond talking. What's important is that, whichever way they communicate, they must understand each other.
How language connects an individual to his family, globe or specific society
What gives us connectivity is when we understand one another. And we can only understand one another if we understand our language. Language is important when we are talking about connection.
Last week, I attended a camp program in which there are many people from different ethnic groups. The dominant ethnic group is Yoruba and so many of the people sometimes talked in yoruba.
So those that don't understand Yoruba would get lost and would not contribute. Until they changed to the official language, English, they won't contribute.
We can see how the official language, English could connect different ethnic groups from the same society together. Language has a way of connecting us together. If you understand my language, you will understand what I'm communicating.
Which is yours mother tongue? and which languages are spoken and understood in your home other than your mother tongue?
My mother tongue is Yoruba. I can speak and write in my mother tongue very well. Some people can speak it and can't write it. But I can do both. Yoruba is one of the common language in Nigeria.
Yoruba is majorly spoken in the Southwest region of Nigeria. Although there are Yoruba ethnic group all over the nation. But majorly, they dominate the Southwest region.
Apart from Yoruba, the other common language that's spoken in my home and society is English. English is gaining more ground because it's the official language of my country, Nigeria.
Nigeria adopted English language as the official language because they were colonized by Britain. Then after gaining independence, they continue educating their children British English.
How many languages do you know and how did you learn more than one language?
I know two (2) languages very well. And the two languages are : Yoruba and English. Yoruba is my mother tongue and I am very good at it. I can speak it fluently and I can also write it ver well.
English is the official language of my country, Nigeria. Every one is expected to understand it since it's the official language that is used to communicate.
For my mother tongue, it's learned from childhood. Since it's the primary language that my parents speak. So, even before I started attending school, I have learned to communicate in Yoruba.
I started learning English language when I began Nursery school. It's the language we used to communicate in school. And do the teachers would only teach in English, expect when they are teaching us Yoruba.
So, in essence, I learned English in school and Yoruba from home and also in School. Yoruba is also part of the language I learned in school. I actually learned how to write Yoruba in school.
In which language did you study in school to university and which language do you prefer in the education system in your country and why?
The language I used to study is English. English has been the only language that's accepted to study with in my country and so, from my primary education to the university, the means of instruction was in English.
I prefer English language because Nigeria is a country with different ethnic groups and each of the group has her own language. So, if the means of instruction is not in English, we may not be able to understand ourselves.
Also, like I said earlier, Britain that colonized Nigeria introduced them to English and since then, Nigeria has adopted English. And it has become the official language of the country.
Another reason I prefer English is that, it is now becoming the popular language. So, if I go out, there's high probability that I will meet people who speak in English. And it will be difficult for.me to connect with them.
How one language or more than one languages plays an important role in the development of society?
Language plays a vital role in the development of society. Without common language, it may be impossible to understand one another. I believe, having more than languages in the society is good, but having a common language is better.
For example, there are many languages in Nigeria, but there's a common language which makes us to understand one another. We use English as common language. So, if I want to communicate to anybody who does not understand my mother tongue, I use English.
A common language will enable us to be united. And where there's unity, there's nothing we can't achieve. When people understand one another, they will be able to work towards achieving the same goal.
In a society where they don't understand one another, there's no way by which they can progress. Language brings about progress and love. If you see someone who understands your language, you will want to relate with him than those that don't understand your language.
How does culture relate to language?
Culture is way a group of individuals or society behave. I believe there's relationship between culture and language. Sometimes, culture influences our language, the way we talk, relate with one another.
It's believed that some group of individuals possess some certain kind of behavioral attitudes or demeanor because of their culture. And you will often realize that from the way they talk and communicate.
Culture influences language. The way people behave can be seen by how they often talk or communicate in the society. Different cultures can speak a language, yet you will still see how their culture influences the language they speak.
So, in essence, culture influences language. And as a matter of fact, there won't be language without culture. Because it's the people that speak language.
Would you prefer writing in your own language at the time of writing post on steemit, if yes why and if not why not?
Like I said, my mother tongue is Yoruba, but the medium of instruction in every school in Nigeria is English. So, the question that do I prefer writing in Yoruba is, No!
The reason is, I am very fast at writing in English. Also, since we have been learning about English since our primary education, we are used to it. So, I'm used to writing in English.
There is nothing I want to do, whether applying for a job, submitting an application or anything, you will have to submit your entry in English. So English has been the main language we use to write and speak in Nigeria.
So, in essence, I prefer writing in English to any other language because it's very fast for me, easy and simple.
If you want to promote your language in the world, how will you do it? and if you already done, then how much success have you achieved?
One of the ways I will use to promote my language is through social media. Promotion through social media may be of help. And one of the ways people will notice or hear about the language is to hire social media influencers.
In addition, language festival can also be a way to promote it. It can be done once in a year where the people will celebrate their language, promote it.
Also, like I said earlier, it's taught in some schools. Although, it's depreciating now. If it's made compulsory as one of the courses in schools, then can also be of help.
Conclusion
In this post, I have been able to share how language is very important, how it connects people to their family, their society and the globe. I have been able to also tell you the language I can speak and write and how I learned them. Thank you for reading through my post.

I too prefer the English language, it is the easiest to write and even to speak. It's great to know that your native tongue is Yoruba, I've been in Yoruba land and there i started learning the language but ive forgotten much if it since I left.
Eeyah... Glad to hear you once learned Yoruba. Don't worry, you will still have time to learn when you come to southwest. I pray you have opportunity to spend some time in the Southwest. Thank you for visiting my post.
Kind regards!
At times I use to ask myself who created languages, how did people come up with the different languages, how would the world have been communicating if there were no languages🤔🤔🤔🤔.
Without language, communication would have been difficult, misunderstanding could have been the order of the day.
I like the way some governments make it compulsory to learn a language in school. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about language.
Yeah. You are right. There won't have been agreement or understanding if there were no languages. Thank you for reading through my post, friend @chant.
Yes. English is a universal language. It's the language I used in learning from my primary to the university. Thank you, my friend for engaging my post.
Kind regards!
Language is very important to us, your mother tongue is Yoruba. And you can write and speak very well in your mother tongue. You shared through your post, many can speak this Yoruba language but can't write. You can write and speak this Yoruba language. You also know this language as well as English. It's actually much better for you. And the official language of your country is English
Yes... I can write and speak both English and Yoruba very well. Yes, some people can only speak Yoruba. People who can actually write it must have attended primary or secondary education because it's where Yoruba is taught. Thank you for stopping by, reading and leaving a nice comment on my post.
Kind regards!

Haha 😂😂... It's not possible to understand all language. Yes, I believe we will understand or speak one language when we get to heaven.
Thank you for visiting my post and reading through.
Kind regards!
You have explained so well about language, truly language is more than talking but understanding one another, it brings peace, progress and unity.
To compulsory our language in school might help but to me I think parents too need to help in teaching their children about their mother's tongue.
Yeah... You are right. Parents have a lot to do if they want their children to understand their mother tongue.
There's a woman called Oluwabunmi Bamitele, a woman who played a role of kinkinyiu in "Abejoye", Mount Zion Movie. That lady, according to her, forced her children to know their mother tongue, Yoruba and at the same time they are good at English.
So, the role of the parents can't be overemphasized.
Thank you for engaging my post, my friend.
Kind regards!
You are welcome bro
Taking language out of the equation is like a world without communication or expression, understanding one another will be hard.
I am equally a Yoruba and I speak it well though not as much as I can write. I also write better in English.
I wish you the best on your contest post
You are right, my friend. Without language, there's no understanding. Thank you for visiting and reading through my post. I'm waiting for your entry, too.
