What are the least sold consoles in the history of video games?

in INVEN Gaming4 years ago

Since the launch of the first video console in the world, almost 5 decades have passed full of consoles and games, which as time went by have evolved to what we know today. Some companies survive over the years, but others would be forgotten because of bad decisions they made at the time.

In all these years we have been able to see many interesting things, such as the generational jump between 2D and 3D, revolutionary and innovative videogames or really incredible consoles. However, not everything was abundant and happy for some companies, because they would make certain videogames that failed in the market.

Such failure is usually based on the amount of consoles sold, usually you must recover the money invested in the creation of such a system, from that point the companies would start to have profits, but when the console does not meet the expectations automatically becomes a business failure.

To cite a recent example we have the Nintendo Wii U, an eighth generation console that only sold 13.5 million units, considering that it lasted more than 5 years in the market makes it a failure for the company Nintendo. However, in the past there were other video consoles that would overcome the failure in video games in an epic way.

Below, I'll show you some of the lowest selling consoles in the video game industry, making them a big loss for their development companies.

Virtual Boy

It is not surprising to see this "laptop" within this list. It was launched in July 1995 and only lasted one year in the market, a decision that was made due to the low sales it had. In spite of being a console with a very advanced concept for its time, it was not well received by users.

Its black and red colors on the tiny screen were not a pleasant experience for those who experimented with it, besides causing dizziness among other symptoms, ending up burying it in oblivion. Nor did it have a good catalogue of games, which was no more than 22 titles, something that several people took into account before buying it. Only a total of 770,000 units were sold.

Philips CD-i

The intention of Philips in 1991 was to launch a multimedia entertainment center, capable of performing multiple tasks, including the most remarkable was playing video games, but they did not consider that designing this platform (which was the most revolutionary of its time), would have a high cost of production, so it would affect the launch price.

That's how this huge console was put on sale with a price of $700, something that very few were willing to pay, considering that at that time there were consoles like the Super Nintendo or Sega Mega Drive / Genesis that cost less than half as much as the Philips CD-i, would directly affect their sales, resulting in 570,000 units sold.

Apple Pippin

Many do not know that Apple in partnership with Bandai in 1995 launched a video console considered by many a rarity in history, with one of the most innovative controls of the time and the power of a computer, this was the Apple Pippin, but despite its features only lasted 2 years on the market.

The problem with the Apple Pippin was that it came at a bad time, because other companies that had already gained ground in the industry were present at that time, as well as having too high a price. Only 100,000 units were produced, making it one of the worst selling consoles in the history of video games.

These were the least sold game consoles of all time, if you think there is another one worthy of being in this list you can indicate it in the comments section.
