Unnecessarily large open worlds in video games

in INVEN Gaming4 years ago

The vast majority of video games today focus on a world that encompasses gigantic dimensions with respect to its environment. A city, country and even a planet are the places that can be developed in a video game, making the player explore every corner.

This theme has been developing for a long time in video games, but few titles have been able to cover these worlds in an ideal way. For example, in Grand Theft Auto V, we can interact with something in every corner of this game, turning its environment into a world full of things to be explored.

However, there are some videogames that unnecessarily have a too large world, going through very long paths without finding absolutely nothing to interact with, becoming a bit repetitive in this aspect. This does not mean that they are bad video games, only that in future sequels or projects of the developer should improve this point.

Next, I'll show you some video games that have an unnecessarily large open world, finding many parts or very long stretches, where there is practically nothing to do.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Breath of the Wild is without a doubt an excellent video game with many possibilities and a great amount of missions that catch the player, offering hundreds of hours of entertainment to be able to finish it 100%, however, not everything in this title was perfect, one of them was its enormous open world.

Sometimes we travel from point A to point B without interacting with anything, making the journey a bit boring and monotonous, consuming a lot of the player's time. At first we may not see it because we are surprised by its excellent graphics and gameplay, but once you want to complete it 100% you realize this small detail.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

The Metal Gear saga was always characterized by being a game where action and spying were always present, so including an open world in this type of videogame would not be a simple task at all, this can be seen in its fifth installment called The Phantom Pain, where there are places or paths in which the player must only walk, without having anything to interact with.

Obviously the game transports you to a scenario as close to a desert as possible, to give some realism to the main character's situation, but it was a rare decision on the part of Hideo Kojima who has been working on his prequels with a formula that has worked very well over the years, so I'm sure Konami wanted to incorporate this kind of gameplay into this instalment.

Death Stranding

Again, we see a video game by Hideo Kojima, but in this case it's one that has had a lot of controversy since its release. If you haven't played it, don't worry, you won't see spoilers of any kind here, but if you see it here, it's because his open world is full of empty paths, where we just have to walk and get to the destination.

This is one of the reasons that makes this videogame a bit boring for many people, however, it has one of the most interesting arguments, although once it's finished it doesn't cause it to be replayed because of how empty that open world can be.

These were some video games that have unnecessarily large open worlds under my experience as a player, this is not to indicate that they are bad games, it's simply a point of view that they can improve, to make those worlds more attractive to players.

What other video game do you think should be on this list? Tell me your opinion in the comments section.
