Eagle - The Capcom character who paid tribute to Freddie Mercury

Street Fighter is one of the games that have a huge weight in the history of video games. Despite the fact that its second installment was the most successful, its first video game released in 1987 would provide the basis for the creation of Street Fighter 2, however, there were very curious characters that were rescued in future titles, one of them was Eagle.

Eagle was a character that had a very curious transition by Capcom, at the time of launching the first Street Fighter was designed to be a tribute to Petrov, which was one of the characters in the famous film Fist of Fury, which starred the legendary fighter Bruce Lee.

With time, several characters of the first Street Fighter were forgotten, due to the new video games that Capcom was launching, however, it was planned to make a redesign of Eagle for a crossover between Capcom and SNK characters, this would be released in 1999 with the name SNK vs.

Here they made several changes to the character, but the one that attracted the most attention was his taste for men, that is, in Capcom vs SNK Eagle he would become the first gay character. The reason for this was to make a tribute to one of the most famous singers of rock called Freddie Mercury, vocalist of the band Queen.

His physical appearance was made to look like Freddie's, only instead of having black hair Eagle would keep it blonde, just like his first appearance. There are several references that determine their tribute to this singer-songwriter, for example, in several of their voices we can find lyrics of Queen's songs, among them we can hear "The Show Must Go On" or "No Time for losers".

Although their homosexuality was evident through the texts that appeared when they won a battle, they decided to change to the western version. Let's remember that the culture between continents is very different, so they wanted the video game in American territory to be sold with a category for young people from the ESRB.

It's interesting how video game developers pay tribute to rock stars through their titles, Eagle was one of them, even though it was originally intended to serve as a tribute to another character, they gave him a new role in Capcom vs SNK, which I personally consider much better than the previous one.
