The TakeOver

in INVEN Gaming4 years ago

The Takeover is not at all complicated: it is a low-budget beat'em up with some good ideas and that in general works very well, but it could have been better in its design and setting. It is entertaining for a day or more, but it is not a game that resists the passage of time very well.

It is possible that the genre has died after works like Street Of Rage 4, surely, but we are not talking about a genre so successful in recent decades, although it was in its early times. The nostalgia and the desire to play a game in the style of Capcom or Konami is quite a delight, and that often clouds the reality of a genre that not only offered successes: there were also failures, as usually happens to all genres. The TakeOver is far from a success, but it is not exactly a failure either.

The TakeOver reminds us that, a game of this genre is not just putting random enemies just to be hit by the protagonists, it takes much more than just killing hordes of enemies. And this is something where this game falters. It does take games that try to differentiate themselves from the rest, especially in an established genre like this, but it is very difficult to find the right game.

For anyone, playing this game in its first minutes is quite an experience. Big characters that give a feeling of being from the 90s, with a classic essence, with good ideas and a soundtrack that reminds us of Street Of Rage. However, after a few hours we will realize the problems that this game has, such as an excessive repetition of enemies, an unnecessary extension of the maps and others.

The plot in this style of games does not matter many: not many of the genre try too hard to show you a good story, but they do not need it either, because the important thing about these games is their mechanics and how fun they are. But speaking of the plot, it is something like a tribute to the games of the 90s. It highlights the design of the protagonist, Megan, who is somewhat poor to tell the truth, but you get used to it. With Ethan there is not so much problem either. But Connor has an uncreative design to tell the truth.

Actually, this game works, just like the old Beat ‘em up, but something more original would have been interesting, if it were able to take what its predecessors left to offer us something with more charisma. The scenes and the villains are somewhat forgettable. Although this is not something precisely negative, in fact the game itself is not intended to be memorable, and on the one hand it is fine, but on the other hand it would have been better to take advantage of the possibilities of the genre and apply it in this generation.

The TakeOver shows that making a Beat ‘Em Up game is not as easy a task as it sounds. It has its positive things, such as its striking visual section, it has some good melodies and it has that classic essence, but it does not stand out much. It also has negative things, because it is limited and repetitive in many cases. Story is not a big deal in the genre, but some memorable foe would have suited him.

In summary, The Takeover is a somewhat simple game, and it is like a tribute or parody to those classics of the 80s and 90s. It has somewhat repetitive battles, unmemorable final bosses and feels somewhat boring after a while. It has its ups and downs, but in general it is enjoyable in company, and even better if you like this style of games. It would have been interesting for this game to detach itself a bit and offer something new, but it fulfills what it proposes.
