I started out with a Monoprice Maker Select Mini V2*. What drew me to that printer specifically was the ease of setup and use. I literally pulled it out of the box, connected the power cord, and it was ready to go. If you're starting out, simple is best. Take as many bells and whistles off as you can, and make it easy for the end user. I'd recommend the printer to anyone considering it in a heartbeat. You can find it cheaper at places like Micro Center, but Amazon has the convenience factor.
