Tajuddin Ahmed went into hiding and marched towards the border to organize the war.Meanwhile, on the evening of March 30, he reached the West Bengal border on the Faridpur-Kushtia route. After crossing the border, Inspector General of the Indian Border Security Force Golak Majumder Tajuddin Ahmed and Barrister Amir-ul Islam were accorded due respect and provided safe haven. A meeting was held between Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Tajuddin Ahmed. At that meeting, Tajuddin Ahmed requested Indira Gandhi to recognize independent Bangladesh. Indira Gandhi assured him that formal recognition would be given in due course.Tajuddin Ahmed led it with determination and devotion. After the formation of the Provisional Government of Bangladesh on 17 April, Tajuddin Ahmed set out for India with Barrister Amirul Islam.
