Have you ever wonder how the massage or email receive you in instant they send? It maybe sends from any corner of the world that thousands of kilometer away. It is possible by huge network of cable laid all over the world. Some are laid underground and some are under the deep ocean. Cable are fiber optics cable that transfer huge amount of data in huge amount of transfer rate.
Let’s look what is fiber optics and why is so important. Fiber optics are long, very thin glass core with outer surface is covered with cladding. Its diameter is about human hair. That thin cable can carry light signal for very long distance because of its special property. It can reflect the light like mirror then it bounces over and over again and travel very high distance. Then fiber optic can transmit data as a form of light. Main cable contains thousands of small fiber cables. In practically if we transmit long distance the light is getting weak. As a solution we need to install signal amplifier in about every 50 miles. Then another problem is if fiber optic cable carry only light signal how can power the signal amplifier. The answer is the there are several protective layer in the outer surfaces. In that layer there are coper layer as shown in the picture below. That cupper layer carries electricity to power up the amplifier.

The fiber optic is invented for medical purpose which is call endoscope. You might have heard that. Endoscope is a machine that have small tube contain fiber optic cable. Small cable is inserted to body and observe about internal organ and carry out some small surgery.

All over the world cover with huge network of fiber optic cables and the internet speed in unimaginably increase. Earlier we use dialup connection that has speed of only 56 Kbps. Then 1 Mbps broadband is used and then 50 Mbps broadband is also came. But soon we can experience 1 Gbps internet speed thanks to the fiber optics. For references the NASA internet speed is 91 Gbps. Above mentioned speeds are in bits per second. (8 bits per second = 1 bytes per second.)

Hope you all learn something from this article. Thank you everyone and special thanks to Vimukkthi Vithanage @besticofinder and @team-srilanka.

Worth reading and I was able to get some extra knowledge about fiber optic.
I have been using an unlimited fiber optic connection in Oman since last year and my feeling about the connectivity is awesome. Speed is 40 Mbps and we never faced any issue and price was also affordable compared to other expenses like water and electricity.
