Syed Nazrul Islam
Syed Nazrul Islam is a Bangladeshi politician. He was the first Acting President of Bangladesh. He served as the Acting President of Bangladesh from 10 April 1971 to 1972. Martyr Syed Nazrul Islam was born in 1925 in Jasodal Birdampara of Mymensingh district (now Kishoreganj district).
He started his education at Yashodal Middle English School After that he spent his school life in Kishoreganj Azimuddin High School and Mymensingh District School. He passed Matriculation from Mymensingh Zilla School in 1941 in the first class with letter marks in two subjects. In 1943, he passed the IA examination in the first class with distinction from Anandamohan College Then he was admitted in the history department of Dhaka University.Syed Nazrul Islam graduated from Dhaka University in 1946 with distinction.(Hons), MA in 1947 and LLB in 1953.Syed Nazrul Islam was elected vice-president of the Salimullah Muslim Hall Union in 1946-47.He was elected Sports Secretary of Daksh.
He got involved in politics in 1947 He was elected as the general secretary of Muslim Chhatra League He played an important role as a member of the All-Party Action Committee during the historic language movement.
Syed Nazrul Islam refused government service even after successfully passing the Central Superior Service Examination. He joined Anandamohan College in 1949 as a lecturer in history He later joined Mymensingh as a lawyer in 1955. In the historic election of 1970, Syed Nazrul Islam won the Mymensingh-17 seat by a landslide in the National Assembly.Tajuddin Ahmed formed a government with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as President and in his absence as Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam as caretaker President and Prime Minister himself and addressed the radio on 10 April as the Prime Minister of the independent Bangladesh government. In the absence of Bangabandhu, he was sworn in as the Acting President of the Provisional Government established at Mujibnagar on 16 April 1971. After the return of Bangabandhu, Syed Nazrul Islam took charge of the Ministry of Industries.In the 1973 general election, he was elected unopposed as a Member of Parliament from Mymensingh-28 constituency.After the election, he was in charge of the next cabinet and the ministry of industry He served as the Deputy Leader in the National Assembly Later, when Bangabandhu formed Bakshal in 1975, he became the Vice President of Bangladesh for the second time. Despite being the Vice President during the mourning period of Bangabandhu's assassination on 15 August 1975, he could not be sworn in as the caretaker President in the absence of the President for the assassins.Syed Nazrul Islam was brutally murdered in the Central Jail on November 3, 1975 while in custody.
Syed Nazrul Islam is the foremost man in the history of Bangladesh, under whose direct leadership the expatriate Bangladesh government or Mujibnagar government liberated Bangladesh from the clutches of Pakistan through a nine-month armed liberation war and gave Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman the dream of an independent territory. This incident gave an opportunity to the Bengali nation to proudly revive in front of the world.
