Today is 05th of June 2021. That is World Environment Day. Environment day also called Eco day. But its official name is United Nations World Environment Day (UN WED). It has been 47 years since the United Nations declared World Environment Day. That is, it was first started on 5th of June 1974. Accordingly, World Environment Day under the theme ‘’Ecosystem Restoration’’ was celebrated in a grand manner in Pakistan today. Last year it was held in Colombia under the theme ‘’Time for Nature’’. As far as I can remember, Sri Lanka has never celebrated World Environment Day internationally in any year. The United Nations has set a special day to raise awareness about environmental issues at least once a year. This day is celebrated by more than 143 countries in the world. A song has been composed to commemorate World Environment Day. The author here is the poet Abhaya K.

Our cosmic oasis, cosmic blue pearl
the most beautiful planet in the universe
all the continents and all the oceans
united we stand as flora and fauna
united we stand as species of one earth
different cultures, beliefs and ways

Actually, the most important thing to say here is pollution. The best example of this is Sri Lanka. Although there are other countries related to this, I mention Sri Lanka here because it is my mother country. The best example of this is the X-Press Pearl ship that has just emerged. At the moment it is having a huge impact on our coastline.

In addition, it can be said with confidence that other large scale pollutions in our country.
So I think not only the government but all of us should take responsibility about this. So even if we set a date for environment pollution, we should not limit ourselves to this day.

So we have to protect the environment somehow. We must love the environment. Then the environment will protect us too. As well as environment will love us too.
