Chairs are made of both plastic vines and canes. Today I am going to tell you about weaving chairs using canes. This cane chair weaving belongs to the cane industry. From the past to the present, the cane industry in Sri Lanka has a high position. There are many cane products in our country that have attracted many foreign tourists. Cane chairs are one such thing. There are also wicker baskets, colander and various cane ornaments for sale in the market. Cane products are actually more expensive than products made from plastic. For example, a wicker colander is about ten times more expensive than a plastic cane canopy. This shows that the market value of cane products is good.

Before weaving the chairs with the canes, the canes required for weaving each chair should be prepared. The whole cane should be cleaned and cut off and then thinned in the middle of them. Since it takes a while to make the cane needed for a chair, that cane are available for sale. In such a place we can buy canes for weave chairs.

Thinning canes

Once the canes are set up in this way, the weaving of the chairs can begin. There are several types of canes and the type of "Nara cane" and "Kakulu cane" that is used for weaving chairs.

It takes about two days for one person to weave this chair. This weaving is done using the ring pattern.

The ring pattern is also used for weaving this chair. It takes a person about a day and a half to weave one such chair.

I mentioned above that the ring pattern was used to weave those two chairs. This pattern is called a ring pattern because it takes the shape of a ring. This image makes it even clearer.

Here are some other patterns used to weave chairs

This must be the reason such skills are hard to find these days. I wonder how they survive without tourism now.

Yes, what you said is true. These chairs are bought by foreign tourists. Their absence is something that greatly affects this job.

Not only the chairs right? I think entire cane industry was highly depended on tourism. I hope local can support them, but the prices are the problem!

Yes, that's right. This is a matter that affects the cane industry as a whole. And As you said it would be nice if the locals could help.
