While awaiting trial on rape allegations, Danushka Gunathilaka, a cricket player for Sri Lanka, was granted bail; nevertheless, he is no longer allowed to use Tinder or his social media accounts.

Gunathilaka, 31, was arrested in the wee morning of October 6 at Sydney's Hyatt Regency hotel, where he was staying while the Sri Lanka's cricket team was in Australian for the T20 World Cup.

Regarding the four allegations of having intercourse against his will, he has not yet filed a plea.

On Thursday, Gunathilaka appeared in London's Downing Centre local court via video connection from Parklea prison, when Magistrate Mary Wahlquist granted him bail.
Police prosecutor Kerry-Ann McKinnon opposed bail on the ground that Gunathilaka constitutes a flight risk and it would endanger the complainant's safety. For legal reasons, her identity cannot be revealed.

Wahlquist said that if Gunathilaka were just an Australian citizen accused with the same crimes, she would think about how bail would've been handled.

Murugan Thangaraj SC agreed that would result in Gunathilaka's release.

He would surely be freed on bail under these circumstances, Thangaraj continued.

According to the police fact report prepared to the court, the complainant made an attempt to release the suspect's hand by grasping his wrists, but the defendant tightened his hold around her neck.

The complainant was attempting to leave, but the accused was delaying her because she feared for her life.
In a police interview after being detained, Gunathilaka acknowledged some of the suspected victim's testimony, although he denied becoming violent or operating without authority.

The complainant did not give her agreement to any of the additional sexual acts that were done or to have sex without using a condom, the prosecution claims.

Thangaraj said that Gunathilaka had produced his passport and was cooperating with the investigating police.

He has not showed any potential to escape, according to Thangaraj.

Gunathilaka was granted bail with several conditions, such as a $150,000 bond and a ban on using Tinder or other dating apps.

The usage of his present social media accounts is also prohibited unless he is accompanied by legal counsel.
McKinnon believes that the accused person may be in danger.

She described how the man had been at her house when they went together to the address.

Thangaraj confirmed that the two of them had gone to her home together, despite his claims that it was midnight, he has never been to the area before, and that they had been traveling for up to fifteen minutes.

How could he possible remember where she lived under such conditions, even if he tried? Thangaraj said.

The unidentified complainant was forced to delete her social media profiles as a result of online bullying, claims McKinnon.

She said that the harassment was coming from users with "Sri Lankan names."

Thangaraj thinks that's not significant.

He alleged, "He hasn't motivated a single person to do a single thing.

She is no longer using social media, therefore everything is over, he added.

Gunathilaka will need to live in a certain location and visit the police station every day.

After connecting on her on Tinder, meeting up, and returning to the Rose Bay home, the cricketer allegedly choked her three times.

Gunathilaka came in Australian with Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup team, but he only got to participate in their opening game before pulling out of the competition due to a hamstring issue.
