A Steem Witness Node Requirement

Steem is based on DPOS (Delegated Proof of Stake), thus requiring less CPU resources than POW e.g. bitcoins.

As of today, one of my witness node consumes the following:

  • 397 GB or steem directory including the blockchain data - you can download a snapshot from https://files.steem.fans/ for a faster replay/reindex.
  • slightly more than 2G RAM used.

For a witness node, here are the plugins that I turn on on my node

plugin = witness block_api webserver condenser_api

You probably only need to turn on witness. The other plugins are for local services.

So, to run a Steem Witness Node, you probably need a VPS or a dedicated server if you don't want noisy neighbours with the following settings:

  1. 8GB RAM but recommended 16GB because during replay, it would consume more.
  2. Dual core, but in theory, a single core would be fine
  3. 1TB hard disk, because you would need to download the snapshot and unzip. Unless you want to replay from the block 1. SSD recommended.
