Vaquita de San Antón in El Junquito, Venezuela/Vaquita de Santón en El Junquito, Venezuela

Today I found this little ladybird while tending the garden bushes. I've always seen them around here but today I wanted to know more about them, so I looked up some information. I checked in several dictionaries, watched some videos, consulted on the internet and this caught my attention.

Hoy encontré esta mariquita mientras cuidaba las matas del jardín. Siempre las he visto por aquí pero hoy quise saber más de ellas, así que busqué información. Revisé en varios diccionarios, vi algunos vídeos, consulté en internet y esto me llamó la atención.

• Farmers love them because they clean the plants from aphids.

Los agricultores las aprecian mucho ya que se encargan de limpiar las plantas de los pulgones.

• They have a striking red colour with black spots. There are also yellow and other colors.

Tienen un llamativo color rojo con pintas negras. También las hay de color amarillo y de otros colores.

• They are beetles and are classified by groups according to the number of spots they have. This one I'm showing here has 19 spots, if I'm not mistaken.

Son coleópteros y se clasifican por grupos según el número de manchas que tengan. Este que muestro tiene 19 manchas, si bien puedo ver.

• They deposit their eggs where there are aphid colonies, which will be their food when they have become larvae.

Depositan sus huevos donde hay colonias de pulgones, que serán su alimento cuando se hayan convertido en larvas.

• They are diurnal insects that hide at night.

Son insectos diurnos que se esconden en la noche.

• In winter they take refuge in the bark of trees to emerge in spring.

En invierno se refugian en las cortezas de los árboles para emerger en primavera.

Pueden vivir entre uno y dos años, y excepcionalmente alcarzar los tres años de vida.

• They can be food for birds, spiders, frogs and defend themselves from their attackers by secreting an unpleasant smell that keeps them away.

Pueden ser alimento de pájaros, arañas, ranas y se defienden de sus atacantes segregando un desagradable olor que los aleja.

I knew nothing about ladybirds and today I learnt something so beautiful and valuable, so let's take care of them!

No sabía nada de las mariquitas y hoy aprendí algo tan hermoso y valioso, así que ¡a cuidarlas!
