The Elder Sister - 비오는 날 제주도에서의 휴식

브룩클린 박물관, 뉴욕(Brooklynn Museum, New York)

제주도 여행중 제주도립미술관을 찾아 갔을 때, 마침 “현대 프랑스 예술가” 전시회가 열리고 있었습니다.

당시 상당히 피곤하고 의욕이 없는 상태였습니다. 여행 전에 상당한 일을 처리해야했고 이에 더해 불확실한 앞날에 대한 고민도 있었기에 지쳐있었습니다. 그렇기에 휴가를 대하는 나의 태도는 그저 “휴식”이었지요.
그 날은 제주도에 주룩주룩 내렸습니다. 비로 인해서 관광지를 방문하기 힘들었기에 제주도립박물관은 우리에게 비를 피하면서도 조용히 관람하게 휴실을 취할 수 있는 좋은 장소였습니다.

그곳에서 이 그림을 보았습니다.

그림은 상당히 전형적이고 익숙한 스타일입니다. 보기에 따라서는 아름다우면서도 성스러운 분위기도 느껴지지요.
편안함을 주는 그림인데 그러한 편안함은 아마도 아기동생을 보살피고 있는 누나의 이미지에서 오는 것 같습니다. 같이 방문했던 여행친구들은 이 그림을 좋아해서 몇번이고 보더군요.

하지만 그림을 여러번 볼수록 우울하면서도 어두운 느낌을 받기도 합니다. 예상해보건데, 그림을 그리던 당시 화가나 모델이 우울한 마음의 상태가 아니였을까 생각합니다.

작자는 윌리엄 부게로입니다.
윌리엄은 살아서 활동하던 당시에 상당한 명성을 누렸습니다. 당시에는 인상파가 태동하여 사회적인 반향을 일으키던 시기였습니다. 당시 인상파는 이해하기 어려운 매우 이상한 화풍으로 간주되었습니다. 윌리엄은 아주 착실하게 과거의 관습적 화풍을 따랐고 많은 명성을 얻었지요.
그가 세상을 떠난 후에는 반대의 상황이 벌어졌습니다.
윌리엄은 창작성이 없이 기존의 화법을 그대로 따라한 화가로 평가 절하 되었고, 그가 그린 800점이 넘는 그림은 특히 프랑스에서 좋은 평가를 받지는 못했습니다.

지금도 많은 그의 그림이 여전히 미국에 있습니다.

When I visited local provincial museum during my trip to Jeju Island, Modern French Artist Exhibition was being held there as an one-time event.

And I was so tired before having a trip to there that I had managed many works and concerned a lot for my career development. So my attitude of the vacation was just to be relaxed.
It rained the day that we could not visit most of outdoor tourist attractions. So we went to Jeju Provincial Museum in Jeju Island, South Korea.

There I saw the painting “The Elder Sister, reduction(La soeur aînée, réduction)”.
It was very conventional and traditional style that I felt beautiful and holistic in a certain view.
This painting gave a sort of comfort that comes from the image of a young woman caring for her brother. My companions of the trip liked this painting most among all others.
But as I see this painting more and more, it evokes a gloomy and dark feeling. I think the painter or the models might be in bad mood when it was painted.

This painter is William bouguereau, French, 1825-1905.
He got high reputation in his time when Impressionism took place first time. So right after this death, he got blamed a lot as he just had followed very conventional style of painting without any creativity and his paintins over 800 pieces undervalued especially in France.

Many his painting still are in America and this painting is in Brooklynn Museum, New York.
