The Unending Osimhen Saga

After losing their league title to Inter Milan last season, it's a critical summer transfer window for Napoli ahead of the new season as they've managed to stay in the news almost all summer with the lingering transfer of Nigerian star, Victor Osimhen.

With 26 league goals to claim the golden Boot in 2023, Osimhen powered Napoli to their first league title in 33 years and in the process signed a new contract that has now become a headache for both sides until 2026.

I believe the former Lille man has fallen out with the club's management following some misunderstandings last season, although it still looks like much of the supporters love their star man.

PSG look to be leading the race to sign him but are looking reluctant to meet the €120 million release clause for the Nigerian. The same reason Chelsea are reported to have pulled out and it looks like Napoli are determined to let him go, with the reported agreement to bring in Belgium forward, Romelu Lukaku.

It looks like Osimhen is also resigned to leaving but his release clause and his over €10 million annual salary may prove decisive. Perhaps, he'd be wiling to take a pay cut.

Personally, I'm not a fan of his and I'm not sure if I'd like to see him in the Premier League. My biggest gross with him was his outburst against former Nigerian coach, Finidi George after the coach was alleged to have pointed accusing fingers at him following Nigeria's underwhelming performance in a world cup qualifier.

With no concrete evidence of this and Finidi already coming out to debunk such, Osimhen was immature in his reaction and handled the situation poorly. If at all the story were true, one would have expected he reached out to Finidi for clarification and also to express his displeasure, rather than take to social media, with many Nigerian fans calling for his ban from the national team.

It'd be a big shock should he stay on in Napoli for the coming season but if he were to leave, I think PSG may be a good fit, also considering he excelled during his last spell in France with Lille.

Sort:

Big clubs will definitely be put off by his attitude. There's no doubting his talent, but the big clubs now value the culture in the dressing room above any individual, as it has proven to produce success on the pitch.

Exactly, reason I believe some are wary. You know clubs will go all out when they believe in a player. I hope he can retrace his steps.
