Here are my photos for today.

Is this a bee? No! It is a very large fly, 12-19 mm and it is called a Tiger Bee Fly, (Xenox tigrinus). It gets its name because of the black pattern on the transparent wings that resemble tiger stripes and because it resembles a bee; however, it is fly. Adults do not bite or sting, and they like to feed on nectar.

It is their larvae that do the damage. You have probably seen the round holes in the wood of your homes, patios or fence posts. That is the work of carpenter bees, and that is where carpenter bees lay their eggs. Along comes this adult tiger bee fly. It enters the nest of the carpenter bee and adds her eggs along with the carpenter bee eggs. When the tiger bee fly eggs hatch, they feed on the carpenter bee larvae.

Thanks for stopping by!

All photos are my own.
