Today’s post is a page from a competition run by the illustrated gazette, Resimli Dünya. The competition began with an announcement on 11 June 1925 (issue no. 7). A brief version of the announcement, outlining the rules of the game is included at the top of every page that features reader submissions. Today’s page consists of said announcement followed by 41 individual photographs of readers along with their answers to the million dollar question (or rather, the 1 lira question): What do you want to be in life?

The answers are highly revealing of the hopes and dreams of consumers of magazines in the 1920s. Among the 41 entries there are submissions from all over Turkey along with an interesting spread of occupations and will-be occupations. Although all of the responses are from male readers, there is an interesting age spread, from 16-year-olds to fathers. The readers’ aspirations come from fields of commerce, agriculture, the arts, and sports. Moreover, many readers convey a sense of social responsibility, expressing the desire to be a useful member of society while also pursuing their own interests.

While many of the responses portray remarkable aspirations, the award for most absurd desire goes to Mahmut Celalettin of Adana (submission 1.9).

What do you want to be in life?
We are going to print the submissions of those of our readers who send their four- to five-line answers to this question along with their picture. After publishing all of the responses we will draw fifty readers at random and award them one-lira prizes. It is requested that responses be sent to the Illustrated World’s Office of Competitions.
