Facts about the Nigerian masquerade

This story is about the ekpe masquerade society club in calabar, Nigeria.. This beautiful masquerade was a voice in those days in calabar... Voice refers to the law, the ruling head and so on..
It was used to establish and abolish laws .

The famous Mary slessor used the voice of ekpe to stop the killing of twins (when she was close to the village head , she convinced the village head to tell Ekpe to announce to the villagers that anyone that is caught killing a set of twins should be fined by giving sets of goats , hens and cowries..)
This was heavy on the people but it worked!!
Mary preached peace and Unity nationwide ..
Today when this ekpe is out .. people stand in respect and admiration of the beautiful and colorful masquerade that was a voice in those days...
Ekpe means lion.. and the Lions roar brings respect and submissiveness...
