Stone Carving

This is most beautiful stone carving I saw when I visited the Old Kingdom exhibition room, I think it is also the only one stone carving depicts the animals in this exhibition room. If you cannot see clearly in the photo, the below photo shows the colourful picture draw by S.Cannor in 1986.

It also shows that the whole original monuments was separated in the past, then the pieces are collected in different places, such as Copenhagen , Berlin and Turin. This is an unfortunate thing, taking part of Egyptian monuments and dispersing their pieces was a common thing in the past, fueled by the strong demand of Egyptian antiquities from many collections around the world. An important subfield in modern Egyptological research is indeed excavation of the historical documents and museum storerooms to try to put dismembered monuments back together again and determine where they originally stand. The Sarcophagus of Duaenre (2543 - 2435 BC)

The below photo shows one massive stone sarcophagus which was found in 1903 by the Egyptian workmen in the mastaba tomb of Dauenre, near the pyramid of Cheops in Giza. The reliefs gracing the remains of the funerary chapel of the tomb and a block that was removed from it, presently in Boston, inform us that Duaenre was a prince, the son of king Chefren and queen Meresankh, and that he had held the offices of visir and scribe of the sacred books. The oblique cut at the base of one of the short sides of the sarcophagus was possible meant to make it easier to drag, the inner cavity being rather small, the deceased must have been laid in it on his side in a half-contracted position.
