Discussion of electoral body/history in Nigeria
An electoral body is an agency in charged with the responsibilities of organizing and conduction of free and fair elections in a country, it is headed by a chair man, the origin of electoral bodies of Nigeria can be traced to the period just before the actual independent to elect the government to which the British would hand over by October first 1960. The government therefore established the electoral commission of Nigeria (ECN) to conduct election.
The electoral bodies in Nigeria are
• Electoral commission of Nigeria (ECN) : It was established in 1959 to conduct general elections ,that handle in the government received and hosted in Nigeria place of independence on October first 1960.
• Federal electoral commission (FEDECO) :
This electoral body was established by the military regime of general olusegun obasajo, it was to period of transaction from military to government FEDECO organized election in 1979 which was herded in the second republic under president shewhee shagari, FEDECO was heaved by a chair man in (1976 to 1979) this body also conducted the follow up of general elections in 1973 under another chairman in the person of justice victor G ovio whiskey (1980 to 1989). FEDECO was devolved with the military intervention on how the 31st of December 1983 along side, other democratic institutions.
• National electoral commissions (NEC) :
NEC was set up by the government of general Ibrahim Rabagida in 1987 to consider the serves of election under transaction of democracy or program. This election ushered in the third republic that was shot lived. The third republic was headed by a military president at the federal level and civilian governors at the state level, the chair man of NEC was the 1989 Prof Eme Awa (1987 to 1989) Prof Humphrey Nwosu was appointed chairman of NEC in 1989 and he conducted control versa, June 12 1993 elections NEC devolved in 1993 by general Sani Abacha.
•National electoral commission of Nigeria (NECON) :**
The electoral body was set up in December 1993 to conduct election into the local government council and the state and national legislature Abacha died suddenly in June 1998 and the whole process was abandoned. This institution elected under the program were not even inaugurated, NECON was headed by Ambassador (prof) Oken Edet Uya (1991 to1993) and Chief summer Dagogo Jack (1994 to 1998) ,Abuduisalarm Abubaker over as head of the state of Nigeria, after the death of Abacha and dissolve NECON and set up a new electoral body.
