King Francis of France defeats the Swiss army under Cardinal Matthaus Schiner at Marignano, northern Italy.

1759

A key event in the Seven Years’ War that involved the great European powers at the time, the battle took place on the farm of Abraham Martin. Because of this, the battle is also often called the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. British troops under the command of General James Wolfe defeated the French in the very short, 15-minute long battle and took over Quebec. The Battle resulted in the French giving up their control over areas in present-day Canada and most of North America coming under the control of the British.

The English statesman Charles James Fox was taken ill and died at his home in London, just as he was about to introduce a bill abolishing slavery.

American-Mexican war: US General Winfield Scott captures Mexico City

Phineas Gage survives a 3-foot 7-inch iron rod being driven through his head; the reported effects on his behavior and personality stimulate thinking about the brain.

Henry Bliss is the first person in the United States to be killed in an automobile accident.

1902

The first conviction in Britain using finger-prints as evidence was in the case against Harry Jackson by the Metropolitan Police at the Old Bailey. He had left his thumbprint in wet paint on a window sill and was tracked down through it. He was sentenced to seven years.

A railway explosion is faked by the Japanese as a pretext for the invasion of Manchuria, China.

1942

Nazi minister of justice Otto Thierack agrees to the 'extermination through labour' of 'asocials'.

1956

IBM introduces the RAMAC 305, 1st commercial computer with a hard drive that uses magnetic disk storage, weighs over a ton

1974

3 members of the Japanese Red Army (JRA), a communist militant group that was formed in Lebanon, stormed the French Embassy in the Hague and took 10 hostages, including the French Ambassador. The siege ended after the militants’ demands for a release of another JRA member, cash, and a plane was met.

1980

The bear who went missing on a Scottish island while being filmed for a television commercial is recaptured.

1982

A mother who claims her nine-week-old daughter was killed by a dingo appears in court in Australia charged with her murder.

1987

A radioactive object is stolen from an abandoned hospital in Goiânia, Brazil, contaminating many people in the following weeks and causing some to die from radiation poisoning.

A 'declaration of principles', the first peace accord between Palestinians and Israelis, is signed.

A relatively unknown former soldier and standard bearer of the Tory right, Duncan Smith is elected the new leader of the Conservative Party.
