The Curse of Pharaoh Tutankhamun: One of the Greatest Mysteries regarding Ancient Egypt

in #history7 years ago

Hello there my fellow steemians, I hope all are doing well. It’s been 14 days since I’ve posted my last article here on steemit. I’m really sorry for not being around because of my illness. I caught cold fever and back pain, and I couldn’t even sit in front of my pc for long enough to write an article. However, now I’m back and I hope I’ll be posting regularly from now on, Insha'Allah.

Today, I’m going to share with you something that’s one of the most prominent subjects that triggered my interest in ancient history: The Curse of Pharaoh Tutankhamun.

Sometimes there are mysteries in the world that should not be desecrated, and one of the best examples is the tomb of one of the most glorious pharaohs of ancient Egypt: Tutankhamun, who since his death in 1323 BC rested inside the Valley of the Kings until his remains were discovered by an excavation in 1922.

From then on, what many considered to be the chilling curse of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun was unleashed.

Great findings, worst destinations:

After almost twenty years of research, on November 24, 1922, the archeologist Howard Carter and his sponsor, Lord Carnarvon, entered the Valley of the Kings, along the Nile River, until reaching the sarcophagus where the remains of Pharaoh rested. Tutankhamun, who died at the age of 19 due to causes that still remain subject to a wide debate among the experts. The discovery is considered as one of the greatest treasure discovery of all time estimated to have a value of $650 million!! The whole coffin of the king was made of pure gold along with other precious metals and stones.

The discovery of the tomb became one of the greatest events of the 1920s, prompting the discoverers to analyze for years the tomb containing the pharaoh's mummified remains and, even, considered mobilizing it to the city of Cairo to facilitate the subsequent investigations of the experts.

However, there was something odd that prevented the mummy of ‘King Tut’ (as he was also known in the media) from leaving the Valley of the Kings. There was a curse engraved on the stone of the burial chamber which reads:

"death will come with swift wings to those who dare to disturb the peace of the king."

In 1923, Lord Carnarvon, passionate collector of archaeological pieces and works of art, was bitten by a mosquito that led him to suffer various fevers to death. During exact the same time, one of his birds was devoured by a snake, his dog died in England, and other eleven people involved in the discovery died in strange circumstances, including the secretary of Carnarvon and one of their relatives, Lord Westbury, who ended up committing suicide.

At the same time, the engraving written in the tomb of Tutankhamun, seemed to prophesy a series of misfortunes that many would dub as the curse of Pharaoh Tutankhamun.

For posterity, it remains one of the darkest legends in the world of research and the slight certainty that the discovery of some mysteries can lead to a much worse fate.

However, what happened to Carter? Why had not the ancestral curse fallen on the person most responsible for the discovery? That is where the evidence that many experts use to justify that such a curse really never existed.

The chilling curse of Tutankhamen's tomb went around the world more than ninety years attracting all the media of the time, terrorizing readers and, incidentally, marking an impact on popular culture that would inspire films like the Mummy.”
