The future´s calling: Why they will remember us as 'THE GENERATION OF CHANGE'steemCreated with Sketch.

in #history7 years ago (edited)

'Because it has been always like this' is a non-acceptable explanation in today´s generation of open-mindedness.

Long-established systems, antiquated laws and gridlocked social structures are not taken for granted anymore.

The fact that something has been decided long time ago and certain things have been done in a certain way for a long time IS NO LONGER VALID.

The 'generation of change' has a mind of its own.

Where we come from - the 'generation of safety'

The generation of our parents - the so called 'postwar generation' - is known for being especially conservative. Austerity, well-considered planning and few changes were the most considerable virtues of a generation responsible for the 'set-up' of the modern world

A lot of systems, rules, laws and agreements have been established over the past decades. The economy started prospering again, the world experienced a general growth, families build their houses with a garden, went on holiday once a year, had a nice health insurance and the world seemed to be alright. At least in my world children were grown up with the idea that they could become whatever they wanted, if they studied well and did their homework.

We played on the streets, drank milk with lactose and on Christmas it was snowing.

We were safe. And our money was safe.

Where we are going - the 'generation of change'

Time passed by and if you asked somebody on the streets to describe today´s world with only one attribute, I bet nobody would use the word SAFE.

Over the years the established 'systems of trust' have constantly lost their reputation. Persons of influence have taken an advantage of their power and defined the rules according to their personal benefits.

The money started to be given to a short group of people, and the gap between rich and poor grew larger.

Life moves in waves.

Facets of change

WE DON´T TAKE ANYTHING FOR GRANTED

Thanks to technological process, modern educational systems and an open minded philosophy, our generation is very well-informed and doesn´t take anything for granted. We don´t accept things just because 'they have been like this'. We are curious, sceptical, creative and independend. Nobody would ever sell us anything we are not totally convinced about.

WE DON´T KNOW (GEOGRAPHICAL) BORDERS

Kids who are grown up in a globalized world don´t know geographical borders. Thank to political alliances, global communication, mobility and multilingualism people and information are constantly in motion. We can have breakfast in London and dinner in New York.

WE CHALLENGE SYSTEMS WITH A LONGLASTING HISTORY

Laws, rights, political systems, banks, social structures - there is no established system or rule which isn´t on trial these days.

Populism is growing, anarchistic movements getting stronger, politicians under pressure and banks under fire.

We reinvent governments, we reset the economy, we define new social bonds. We kick out what´s old and not longer up-to-date.

WE VOTE FOR IDEOLOGY NOT FOR NAMES

Who of our fathers would have believed that in the 21st Century somebody without any political background could be elected the next President of the United States? How many of the Americans who voted for him really believed he would make it?

The Trump election was a VOTE FOR CHANGE.

People are tired of the old systems and their incredibility. They have been listening to many liars during a lot of time.

Now we stand up and raise our voices, because finally they are worth something.

WE DECIDE ABOUT OUR OWN FUTURE

We are independent people. We were brought up to be individuals with an opinion, brave enough to stand up for our rights, strong enough to resist the system´s control.

While most of our ancestors lived in gridlocked structures with determined perspectives and few space for personal development, we are completely free to be whatever and wherever we wanna be.

THE WORLD IS OURS, ready to be conquered. We are the change.

If I compared my life with the one of my parents I wouldn´t find much parallels. Although they were the ones who educated me, who took my hand and showed me the door to the world, I have developed a completely uncoupled mind-set. I am generally more open to change. That will to change and the strong belief in 'something new' are key characteristics of our generation. Our world has grown a bit bigger than theirs. Yes, we are facing challenges they couldn´t even have imagined. But we also have opportunities they have only dreamt of...
