Today in History: Slavery abolished in the United States

in #history8 years ago

Hello Steemians!

Welcome to another episode of the "Today in History" serial, where I bring you daily historical facts and events of the current date.

In 1865 on December 18, in the U.S.A. the 13th Amendment has been formally adopted into the Constitution.

Proclaimed by Secretary of the State, William Henry Seward it was a big step for the United States of America.

William Henry Seward

It was the first of the three Reconstruction Amendments which was adopted following the American Civil War, between the Southern Confederate States of America, and the U.S.

The 13th Amendment starts as follows: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

However the Southern states remained mainly racist, and as labor was still allowed as punishment, the "freed" slaves haven+t felt much change as they could have been convicted for something as harmless as offensive language or selling cotton after sunset.

I think it is important to remember such an big event in the history of the U.S.A., which has, in my opinion, made clear that no human being is worth more or less then another!
