Today in history: Adolf Hitler is named Chancellor of Germany

Welcome to today's episode of the "Today in History" serial, where I bring you daily historical facts and events of the current date.

On January 30. 1933. Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany.

After Hitler was released from prison and published the book "Mein Kampf" in two volumes in 1925. and 1926. where he described his visions of Germany, Germany suffered a financial crises after the stock market of the U.S. crashed.

Hitler and his National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP) saw an opportunity to gain support for their party promising to repudiate the Versailles Treaty, strengthen the economy, and provide jobs.

The power of NSDAP was growing from election to election.
On the elections on September 1930. they got about 18% of the votes and in the July 1932. Reichstag elections, where Hitler was running against Hindenburg, the NSDAP party gained almost 40% of the vote making it the most powerful party in Germany.
Despite being the biggest party Hitler lost those elections to Hindenburg.

Hindenburg at first didn't agree to make Hitler Chancellor, but with the lack of an active Chancellor, he received a letter from Franz von Papen and Alfred Hugenberg, two influential politicians, who urged him to make Hitler new Chancellor.

On January 30. 1933. he was named Chancellor of Germany by Hindenburg and right after becoming Chancellor, Hitler started accumulating more power achieving full legislative control over the the government soon after, giving him the ability to pass any law without consulting.

He was named as "Führer" and Chancellor after the death of Hindenburg on August 2. 1934. remaining at the position untill his death on April 30. 1945.
