Hidden deep in the Masurian forest of Poland are the remains of a Nazi military Headquarters.

You can wander around nearly everywhere, and it is possible to feel the dark ghosts of the recent past with every footstep.

It was here in this top secret location that Adolf Hitler and leading Nazi's formulated military plans and discussed the progress of the war.

Wolfschanze was also the location of the Stauffenburg plot - an assassination attempt on the Fuhrer. It very nearly succeeded, as Colonel Claus von Stauffenburg planted a briefcase with explosives in a meeting, but Hitler himself was only slightly injured when the bomb went off. Stauffenburg and several other conspirators were quickly apprehended and shot.

In October 1944 the Red Army was sweeping through Poland, and took the complex in November. They demolished the complex, but despite using tons of TNT, most of the buildings remained intact, due to the size and reinforced structure. It took another 10 years to clear all the landmines that were hidden around the base.

This is an eerie place in a peaceful setting. You can really connect with the past, and reflect on what could have been had it not been for the bravery, defiance and sacrifice of so many.
