voluntary segregation

Is the American family dead? My understanding is that a family is a unit that has it own talents, history, culture, and security. Many state have apartment buildings, mobile home parks, and whole town that are senior residents only. What happens when you cut off the head - it (what ever it is) dies unless it is a cockroach. When Grandma and Grandpa are separated from the grandchildren how can they teach their talents, history, or culture? The loss can be laid at the feet of parents and children. I have heard "I have enough money. I don't need to put up with the screaming, noisy troublesome kids." Also I have heard from the children, "I don't want to have to put up with those cranky old farts. They take up too much of my time and effort." Now this is not all cases, but there are enough for developers to keep building these segregated enclaves (a portion of territory within or surrounded by a larger territory whose inhabitants are culturally or ethnically distinct). I believe this is breaking up the strength of our country. When children with a history and culture meet with others that have a different culture and history they can see the weaknesses and strength of their own. They have choice. I grew up where there was not much hugging when you meet with a old friend. When being exposed to that I thought it was a good thing. I adopted it into my actions, there for mutating into a more emotionally responsive person to known people and situations. But...I still retain the stand back and see with unknown persons and situations as a safety factor. A handshake is good enough. America should be about the freedom of choice. Society is controlled more and more through fear, social pressure, and propaganda. The family can be an anchor to counter act these factors. The family should be a safe haven in times of trouble. Is the functional family being suicided by voluntary segregation (selfishness)?
