Historically, much of the wealth of the world was in the East and South. It was only with the discovery of the Americas that the wealth inequality shifted in favor of the West. The pinnacle of Western civilization, Rome, financed their empire with the wealth of their Eastern provinces. It would be only natural, after having shorn off all their eastern possessions, that the West devolve into poverty and subsistent existence.

True. The Mongols destroyed hundreds of years' worth of knowledge, wealth, and civilization in their rampage. Persia was left desolate; in the sack of Baghdad alone, humanity lost more knowledge than has ever been written since. Then came the Portugese and Spanish pirates to rob the remnants of the ruins left behind the Mongol disaster.
