RE: Henry VIII excommunication - July 11, 1533 - True or not?
I think the context of Henry's desire for a male heir gets lost in the religious doctrinal debate. Henry's Tudors ascended following the ruinous War of the Roses that devastated the nobility. Practically, without a male heir to inherit the monarchy, Henry rightly feared the dissolution of Tudor rule and the chaos of another civil war. Charles V renegating on his promise to wed Mary Tudor worsened this situation (though Charles's son Philip later wed Mary after Henry's death).
