In hind sight only, we knew they were working on it, and had NO idea how far they were on the project. They could NOT take the risk, because if they managed it first, they could have won the war!

Actually, I think we knew, pretty well, everything they were up to. The enigma had been busted and I am sure there were moles.

Spies were busy, and we did have enough of a read on Enigma for troop movements, but when we finally found the reactor they were building, we were shocked at how little they had achieved, partly because they lacked this heavy water. The spies and the Enigma were the very reason we knew of this program in the first place....

The Germans had not prioritized new super weapons because they were so sure they would win with conventional weapons, that they waited too long before funding these new ideas. A Very poor performance on the atomic bomb, but they were working on a long range bomber, that could reach NYC, with that atomic payload....
