A beautiful gemstone was found in an ancient warrior's tomb.
This beautiful ancient gemstone is what's known as a Greek sealstone. It is so small and intricately carved many details can only be seen by photomicroscopy. It is a depiction of a warrior who is standing over his slain enemy, stabbing his sword into another soldier's neck! All this imagery on less than half and inch of space!
The sealstone was found in a tomb discovered in 2015 in Pylos, Greece, containing a 3,500-year-old skeleton of a man archaeologists are calling the "Griffin Warrior." Valuables found in the tomb also included an ivory plaque of a griffin, four gold signet rings, ivory combs and weapons.
The tomb of the "Griffin Warrior" was a Mycenaean who died around 1500 B.C. The body was in a wooden coffin and surrounded by gold, bronze and silver chalices, vessels, and bronze weaponry. Items also found were hundreds of semiprecious stone beads, gold jewelry, a bronze mirror with an ivory handle, and wild-boar teeth that probably once decorated the warrior's helmet, and the sealstone. The Mycenaeans were the conquerors of the Minoan civilization on Crete sometime between 1500 B.C. and 1400 B.C.
