For some strange reason I’m interested in Canadian history. Well, I’m interested in history but partial to Canadian.

So, let’s see what happened today in our past:

  • 1642 — The first Jesuit in New France, Father Charles Raimbault dies in Quebec
  • 1692 — 14 year old Madeleine de Vercheres gathers about 20 locals into the safety of her family’s fortified home at Vercheres, Quebec and successfully defends against an Iroquois siege for eight days until help arrives.
  • 1800 — James Ferrier is born in Fife, Scotland would become the fourth Mayor of Montreal in 1841 and later a Senator in 1867
  • 1844 — Louis Riel is born near St-Boniface, Manitoba. He would be part of the Red River insurrection in 1869 and would be hanged for treason in 1885
  • 1846 — Canada’s first telegraph company established with Thomas Harris, president of the Toronto, Hamilton, Niagara and St. Catherines Electro-Magnetic Telegraph Co.
  • 1867 — Commercial Bank of Montreal, Canada fails
  • 1870 — Camille Roy is born at Berthier-en-Bas, Quebec would become a priest, literary critic and Rector of Laval University with an expertise on the development of French-Canadian literature.
  • 1881 — McGill University and University of Toronto play the first college football game on the lawn at U of T.
  • 1885 — the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council rules against Louis Riel’s sentence for the North West Rebellion and sets the date of his execution for Nov. 16, 1885
  • 1895 — First K & S Railway work train reaches Sandon, BC
  • 1898 — CPR launches the steamboat Moyie at Nelson, BC to service the Yukon on the Stikine River in northern BC.
  • 1917 — 24th Battalion of Montreal Infantry is mobilized for service in France in WW1
  • 1921 — The Nova Scotia schooner Bluenose defeats the New England schooner Elsie in a best two out of three series at her first International Schooner Championship
  • 1936 — Canada signs its first trade treaty with Germany
  • 1940 — WW2 - RCN River Class Destroyer HMCS Margaree lost in North Atlantic after colliding with the freighter Port Fairy while escorting a convoy. 142 of the ship’s company are lost. Many of the lost had survived the sinking of HMCS Fraser on June 25th
  • 1943 — German U-Boat lands on the coast of Labrador, 32km south of Cape Chidneyand is able to setup an automatic weather station which transmits data to the Germany Navy for three months before shutting down. The station wasn’t discovered until 1981
  • 1944 — Private Ernest “Smokey” Smith earns the Victoria Cross for his actions holding a crossing on the Savio River, Italy against German counter-attacks and destroying at least two enemy tanks
  • 1945 — the government of Mackenzie King gets first reading of the Canadian Citizenship Act in the House of Commons. When it becomes law in 1947 Canada became the first Commonwealth country to establish its own class of citizenship
  • 1947 — wartime price controls are meat are removed.
  • 1958 — Blanche Meagher becomes Canada’s first woman to be appointed as ambassador when she is appointed Canadian Ambassador to Israel. She will later serve as ambassador to Austria and Sweden
  • 1964 — Commons Flag Committee votes to choose the George Stanley design for the future national flag of Canada
  • 1976 — English rock group The Who wrap up their North American tour at Maple Leaf Gardens. This will be the last North American show for Keith Moon.
  • 1986 — Dominion Textile supports Canada’s anti-apartheid policies by announcing their withdrawal from South Africa
  • 1987 — Queen Elizabeth II makes a speech in Montreal, Qubec praising the distinct character of Quebec
  • 1988 — Lubicon First Nations chief Bernard Ominayak reaches an agreement with Alberta to set aside a 250 square kilometer tract of land for a Cree band reserve
  • 1990 — Senate passes the Mulroney government bill overhauling the Unemployment Insurance Fund so employers and workers shoulder the entire cost.
  • 1992 — Canadian Space Agency astronaut Steve MacLean joins the Space Shuttle flight STS-52 leaving Kennedy Space Center. He will carry out seven Canadian experiments during the flight.
  • 1995 — Prime Minister Jean Chretien attends the United Nations joining with 200 other world leaders to mark the UN’s 50th Anniversary
  • 2000 — Prime Minister Jean Chretien calls an election
  • 2002 — Yann Martel wins the Booker Prize for his novel Life of Pi
  • 2003 — Canadian Archbishop Marc Ouellet among 30 elevated to Cardinal by Pope John Paul II
  • 2008 — Canadian dollar drops below 80cents US for first time since mid-2005
  • 2010 — Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission approves purchase of Canwest TV Stations by Shaw Communications including 11 local Global TV stations as well as the Showcase, Movietime and HGTV channels
  • 2010 — Syncrude Canada pays $3million in penalties for causing the deaths of 1600 ducks in a waste pond in northern Alberta in 2008
  • 2014 — Corporal Nathan Cirillo is murdered while standing honour guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The Jihadist terrorist then makes his way to nearby Parliament Hill and into the Centre Block. He injures a guard and engages in a gunfight before Parliamentary Sgt-at-Arms Kevin Vickers kills him.
  • 2015 — Gilles Duceppe resigns as leader of the Block Quebecios after not being elected in his own riding during the General election
