Following the attacks on September 11, 2001, approximately 500,000 people were trapped on the southern tip of the island of Manhattan. Every mode of ground transportation out of Manhattan was shut down. The only way out was by boat. The US Coast Guard asked for all available boats to come to aid in an evacuation. Over 9 hours, ferries, private boats, party boats, and tug boats evacuated those 500,000 people from lower Manhattan. This was the largest sea evacuation in history and many of those that aided in the evacuation have reported that it was the greatest thing they ever did.
