Thoresby Hall

in #history7 years ago

We attended a classic car show today at a local estate, Thoresby Park.

Thoresby Hall is actually the third house built here. The first built in 1683 burnt down in 1746. The second house was demolished by Sydney Pierrepoint the 3rd Earl Manvers, who had the current house built in 1864, for him.

The current house was designed by Anthony Salvin.

The grounds were originally designed by Lancelot 'Capabilty' Brown.

The artificial turf bowling green is new but the view over the lake is original.

The inside is fantastic, with huge rooms and awesome fireplaces. It's difficult to imagine this being a family home until 1984.

This is a fireplace in the library.

The building was sold to the National Coal Board in 1979 due to being under threat of subsidence. The house survived without damage and was sold to Times Warner in 2000, who now run it as a hotel and spa for adults only.

Another hall built in 1533 was actually the first Thoresby Hall but the name Thoresby didn't come into use until the hall was purchased by the 1st Earl Pierrepoint.

Wow, that's some incredible house! I'd like to see a follow-up post with the classic cars, too! :)

Fabulous post looks like you had a great bank hoilday monday :) I visited Belvoir castle today plan to share post tomorrow about it.

Great house and good photos many thanks. Must put this one on my places to visit although your introduction is more than just a taster. JV

They do a taster weekend I think. They also have entertainment on but personally I don't see them having any rock music for me. :)

Thoresby Hall rocks!

I love castles

I took my 5 year old granddaughter to see a castle last week. It's really just a moat and a hill in a wood. She was very disappointed.
We will now need to visit a complete castle again with her.

This house has a fantastic architechture!
By the way, make another post with the classic cars, I love them xD

Two more posts. Classic Cars and Bikes.

Great location truly amazing building, nicer than most buildings that are created in today's era so pleasing to the eye. And the gardens surrounding are also fantastic.

Peace.

I had worked at Thoresby Colliery for 13 years and never visited the hall until now. It is late Victorian and obviously made without a thought for it's cost. The glass in the bay windows is curved. It's a fantastic building.

That looks like an awe-inspiring place to visit. What a wonderful hotel and a great opportunity to stay there.

Great house, I am sure one can get lost inside!!

It's difficult to believe it was a family home and the last private owner lived there alone. It was in a poor state when taken over by the current owners.

Just seen the classic car and now this one! Wow! These buildings are just incredible in their architecture!
Great share again!

Thanks for reading.

Very cool house. Reminds me of the mansions in Newport, RI

I am sure quite a lot of houses used the same designer. I must find out what the designer lived in.
